Hi,

I was always lead to believe that post GCSE`s that if you are smart/intelligent you went to/stayed at school and went to 6th form.

But if you were thick/stupid and can`t count to 2 you went to college.

Whats your view ?

Is this a follow-on from your prior thread?

Depends what you want to study.
Colleges offer a wider range of study, often including apprenticeships, industry-specific training and even some higher learning that most school 6th Forms will not be able to offer.
It's also a change of scene, a different environment, a different way of learning and a perfect getaway if all your school mates were utter dickheads.

I'm presuming you left straight after your O-Levels, though? :D

I did leave school after GCSE`s yes and went to college

I went to a Grammar 6th form after a regular small countryside high school and absolutely hated it. Uniform, high school teachers still on a power trip, strict environment with zero extra activites and incentives. I scraped through my A Levels and regret ever letting my parents push me into it.

Compare that to the college my other half works at and it's a different world. Every opportunity to make your own, vocational courses alongside your traditional A level style courses for anything you could fancy (such as engineering departments with CNC machines), relaxed atmosphere, events all year round, attached gym, you're in charge of your own destiny so no teachers treeating you like a 5 year old over irrelevent things such ass uniform.

If I could go back knowing what I know now I'd have gone to a proper college instead. I feel like due to that 6th Form experience I'm 10 years behind in my career which has had a knock-on effect for other aspects of my life.

Went to college after AS levels years ago and still went to get a degree. No idea where this widespread belief comes from.

If you were smart and intend to persue a career in something substantial like engineering, biology/science then go the 6th form/college/university route.

The other option which imho is the smarter choice (unless your doing the above courses) is to get an apprenticship in a trade skill (electrician/plumber/carpenter etc) and do that, you'll be earning more money in your early 20s than most graduates do after they finish uni and reach 30.

I did a ford technician apprenticeship with college to get technician status (rather than the more basic city and guilds) then an hnc in motor vehicle management ,i was rubbish at school apart from maths
