6th form for the smart and college for thick people ?

When I were a lad I went to Hanley High School (69 to 74) which was for all the clever boys in the City.
The girls had their own version called Thistley Hough.
There was no such thing as 6th form in the High Schools but you could go on to 6th Form College which was by Fenton Baths.
You could also go to 'practical skill' colleges like Cauldon and Moorland which I did in conjunction with my Michelin Apprenticeship.
My Mrs attended Cauldon where she ended up becoming a Chef.
Kids at 6th Form tended to do the poncy courses where they didn't get their hands dirty.

I left school with O Levels in Maths & French but went on to complete a very hard engineering apprenticeship which I turned my back on 2 years later.

It was the view of my school at the time, early nineties.

I royally screwed up my GCSE's, had the humiliation to resit and then do AS level and A levels, I completed but not exactly fantastic. I went to college to learn IT (in 1992 computer education was virtually non-existent). Later, as a mature student, university.

There was a stigma attached with going to college at my school. Nowadays, if I had kids, I would have no hesitation for my children to leave, get an apprenticeship, learn a trade go to college etc.
Why do you think a stigma was attached ?

Society and I guess, extra pressure for keeping up with the 'Joneses' - raised in an affluent town.

So 'drop-outs' such as myself were few but I was one, parents were mad but then, to be honest I was brought up to learn from mistakes and make my own way in life - By gum it took me a few years to get the message but all come good (I think).

Do you consider yourself thick or just hard done by?
Not sure if this question was aimed at me?

I don't consider either the cause - I never applied myself at school and ultimately, no one to blame other than myself.

Am I rocket scientist nope, but I do (like to) think I have a modicum of common sense. ;)

No for op

The sixth form college near me as only been open since 1992.

I think it depends what you want to do. The place near me is more about extending your school qualifications. It didn't really have courses that much different from a regular school, just the highest level.

For college it had a more wider range of courses, and also the manual courses like, woodwork, construction, cooking etc.

Because the sixth form idea was a new thing in my part of the world, a lot of people at my school were always pushed towards taking business studies at college, even when they weren't that academically minded.
