7 A Day - Really ?

Just read an article on the BBC website which recommends that we should now be striving to eat 7 portions of fruit and veg per day. Personally I find this near impossible to do. I would basically have to become a vegetarian.

I was just thinking, is it possible to use vitamin supplements to hit your 7 a day target ? If so, which ones should I be buying ?

i can eat 7 in one sitting so thats cool.

Some **** on my FB has been hammering on about 7 a day for ages.. im sure he is chuffed now.

i dont think its an april fools joke.

It's not April Fools. I've just seen it on BBC News on TV.

My problem is I love my meat. I'm not the healthiest of eaters. I do eat veg and sometimes fruit but not 5 or 7 portions a day.

I was hoping that a little less meat and some vitamin tablets might be an easy fix. :confused: The thought of eating salad for ever is depressing. :(
 
You all know its just an arbitrary number chosen by whoever decides it as simply what they think they can convince people to eat, right?

The recommendation varies country to country. Its completely meaningless. Eat what you want.
 
If I had that many portions of fruit I'd get fat from all the calories and diabetes from the sugar.

But while we are taxing healthy fruit products like smoothies to such a degree we can not seriously expect people to increase their portions of fruit a day.

It's probably OK as long as you eat them throughout the day i.e. not all at once.

I have to confess that I didn't realise that veg was considered better for you than fruit though, so at least I learnt something today.

It's amazing the amount of people who do not realise that some fruit actually contains a lot of sugar.

Yeah but the sugar in fruit isn't as bad as the sugar you get in junk food - it's not high fructose corn syrup that is used in processed food.

Have a Dr friend who mentioned it to me about five years ago. They've known about it for a while but basically didn't release a lot of the info as they could see people were struggling with the five a day message. Thus didn't want to put them off by setting what seems like an impossible goal
