7 things NVIDIA doesn’t want you to know

I don't think most AMD users are that bothered really, i know I'm not when i see something negative said against the company that produces the gpu's i use. It's just one man's blog/opinion at the end of the day.

Hmm, next time you go on a crusade if someone mentions AMD in a negative light I will remind you of this post you made :D

I find it a little strange that a company that apparently specialises in that doesn't seem to appreciate the difference in the intentions of CUDA and Open CL, while CUDA has some aspects of similar functionality to Open CL it isn't its intention to be Open CL and for some uses it is completely made obsolete by Open CL for other uses its far more specialised to the task in hand than Open CL ever will be.

Very true, you'd think they know better.
Just goes to show it is just Nvidia bashing at the end of the day.

The guy is OpenCL nuts and everything he tweets is generally focused around OpenCL. No wonder he wants to bash nVidia, as they lean towards Cuda and that doesn't make StreamComputing any money.

maybe ppl need an Nvidia bashing every now and then, or maybe some of the bashing is legitimate, and there is a reason for it.
holding a hammer and bashing all day wont help, neither holding a shield a protecting all day.
sometimes accepting criticism rather than denying it, might help the company correct a mistake or change it's politic.
not everything is a bashing, trolling fest...

Totally agree not everything is.

This article is a bashing, trolling fest, through and through as you so eloquently put it. :)

"2. Profit per GPU is huge

It is a secret that NVIDIA’s profit margin on Kepler is much higher than 54%. Investors love that – you have to pay it. Guesses are that for the TITAN the profit margin is over 85% and the TITAN Z is even being over 90%. Compared to the industry, that’s a huge margin!

While a lot of money goes into development of tools, even more goes into giving away free GPUs to the researchers. It’s basic psychology that people like balance and therefore it works really well to give away presents. Those researchers then want their university or institute to buy a cluster full of CUDA-cards they got for free. You can do the math.

The main reason why NVIDIA can charge their customers so much, is (and I love to say this): the vendor lock-in by CUDA. If your software is all CUDA, then it might be cheaper to upgrade to the latest Tesla-cards than to buy better priced alternatives and hire StreamComputing to port the code to performing OpenCL. The pain only grows when the competition can deliver faster and cheaper.

NVIDIA doesn’t want you to know what they tell investors."

Shock as company wants to turn profit. It isn't like they are selling food or fuel, they are selling computer graphics cards ( a huge luxury item) so i don't see how you can berate them for turning a profit?

OP might do well to remember this from stulid

"Last warning.
After many RTM's concerning various threads in the GC subforum the moderators have decided on a zero tolerance approach.

Any more off topic rubbish, trolling, thread derailment will be meet with a suspension with no more warnings given.

If suspension doesn't work and it continues then access to this sub forum will be removed for the members causing problems.

If you think you are being singled out, picked on or anything else that could be considered "trolling" then just RTM it. Do not bite back, stay on the topic of the thread you are posting in."

Look everyone knows Matt is a proponent of all things AMD. I'm sure he won't mind me saying that as it isn't exactly hidden but debating if a thread is a troll thread or not just paradoxically turns it into a troll thread. If you think it's a troll thread RTM it and move on :).

I do have to laugh as Matt would never post an article like that from somebody saying something similar about AMD but to me the article looks guff anyway. So I'll take my own advice and close the thread and move on :p.

It's just an article laying some fair criticisms i think. If that is against any specific rule here then i apologise and understand if it has to be locked. :)

EDIT

Ha, Thundy. 10 out of 10 for creativity. :p
