I'm wondering if someone will spec me a 70-300mm lens with a built in focus motor for the Nikon D5100? My budget is £200.

There are so many to chose from I'm unsure which one would be the best for my money so thought I would ask on here to get some more informed opinions.

Thanks

you want one from uk or not bothered if its from hong kong
as for £200 new in the uk for a 70-300mm not easy, maybe go secondhand?
tamron do one you can get for £89 has built in focus motor but no vr, ok as a starter lens
or the Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO Macro DG for £189 don't know how good these are though
also Nikon AF-S 55-300mm f4.5-5.6 G ED VR Lens £249 so you could look for one of these secondhand

Nikon 55-300mm VR is OK, the 70-300mm VR is better, might need to look second hand. The newest Tamron 70-300 VC is quite good as well.

problem with 2nd hand in the uk on the 70-300 vr2 (and many other lenses :/ ) is your still looking at over £300, unless you get very lucky.

It is a difficult budget and I was considering the same thing. I went for the £89 Tamron one. I read up on its limitations so I know what I'm letting myself in for and it will only be an occasional lens for trackdays etc. Haven't got it out of the box yet as I only picked it up yesterday.

Leaves some money for the whole bundle of other bits I want to get at some point.

talking with the guy at the local camera shop and he admits he sells more 2nd hand gear on ebay as he gets a better mark up on it, and even he cant work out why people are willing to pay near new prices for stuff.

It's a shame because it ruins the market for us non-idiots. Luckily it seems to be less prevalent for the more expensive professional equipment like ff bodies and fast zooms, I guess because those buyers aren't the p&s idiots who are used to buying at inflated prices from Currys and Argos.

The Nikon 70-300 VR normally sells for around £275 IME. Bit over budget but very good for what it is. The Tamron does seem to be VERY good as well though... (Although is it still made of plastic that feels like it's going to break if you look at it funny...?)

EDIT: I should probably back up my pricing by saying in forum sales sections, not Ebay.

Not really, any market is driven by what people are willing to pay.

Traders say the same about people buying privately at auctions "driving up the price" but buyers set auction prices, that is just how it works.
