First post here. Been reading hundreds of posts over the last few months after being out the loop for 3 years.

£750-800 available. Looking to upgrade, taking advantage of the price cuts that Conroe will generate.

I want to overclock on air but could be tempted by WC if justified. Was tempted by the 805d 4GHz hype but im wondering if after the price cuts an AMD would be a better bet for overclocking. Its going to be a gaming rig and im replacing almost everything. Will need:

Case, PSU, Mobo, Ram (2gig), CPU, Single graphics card solution, HDD, CD (not interested in HDCD) and anything else you think i need that ive missed out.

If not too much trouble could you give a pricing suggestion with and without a flatscreen 19" in the spec. Budget is £800 without screen and £1000 with. I dont know if people can make any educated guesses as to what I might get for the same money after the price cuts?

Hope this isnt all terribly confusing and thanks a lot for any replies - I appreciate your efforts and experience.

Dam.

Way under budget because i've left out the CPU. Grab a cheap X2 (AM2) 3800+, 4200+ or 4600+ when the price drops after Conroe is released. I think the 4600+ will fit into the budget.

*Welcome to the forums by the way!* :D

Thats really cool of you to post Fender, thanks.

I actually did a double take when I saw the 19" was in the costings. Would the machine you have specced be a reasonable games machine? Thinking of HL2, Doom3, Oblivion etc (modern titles).

Would this 4600+ overclock much and if so how would it compare to a 3.8Ghz OC'd 805D running on the same spec with appropriate motherboard?

Just curious as to pleoples thoughts

Dam.

The Pentium D's aren't actually as good as the X2 line, so if you could overclock the 4600+ from 2.4GHz to 2.7GHz it'll be fast, but not as fast as the new Intel line - Conroe.

It'll easily handle those games, Oblivion is the real system hog but it'll still play nice with some eye candy!

Thanks for your input Fender.

Ill do some reading on AMD processors (ive been reading a lot about Intel simply becasue of the 805D hype) and get to grips with how they overclock.

Anyone else got any suggestions of spec for those prices?
Thanks again Fender,

Dam.

Ive just had a look at the 4600+ on the OC Site and they are £329 for the AM2 X2 version.

What kind of price do folks expect this chip may become after Conroe launch price cuts by AMD? Are they price cutting the whole AM2 X2 range or only the "low end" chips?

Many thanks,

Dam.

Its a shame in your link fenderbass that it doesnt compare the 960 vs 4600 (that would be the intel pentium at the same price) - by 0p infact.

I'd still however if your going to spend that much go for the E6600 atleast because that will beat a 4600.
