Had a quick search around but can't find anything concrete. The 7200.10s seem to be the louder drives, but are the also the quicker? Or are they about the same? Bang per buck?

Trying to justify the extra cash for some 500GB AAKS drives over a couple of 320GB 7200.10s. Apart from the space difference is the noise really that bad to make it worth it?

As far as I know the 7200.9s are the real culprit for noise and that although it's a gamble between the 7200.10 (some are silent-ish, some not so) they're generally speaking not 'that' loud.

I went for an AAKS (320gb) a few days ago and it should be arriving tomorrow. Very happy with the price and reviews I read on it. :)

ive got an aaks and a 7200.10, both 500gb. tbh they are both so close that id just get the cheapest one. the wd is slightly quieter when seeking though

While we're on the subject of 7200.10 vs AAKS does anyone have some benchmarks for these drives in RAID 0 ? Preferably the 500gb ones.

sorry for thread bump aiming this question at owners of both drives really but what are temps like on the AAKS campared with the .10 as most of my .10s get really quite hot if they are not cooled by a fan, the new drive i am looking into wont be cooled by a fan so it needs to be cool running.

oh sorry. i didnt see you asking for some benchmarks. hd tach doesnt work in vista, but i tried hd tune and got these results:

500gb 7200.10:

mimimum: 36.6 MB/sec
Maximum: 74.0 MB/sec

Average: 59.4 MB/sec

Acces time: 13.7ms
Burst: 93.2
cpu usage 5.8%

500gb AAKS:

mimimum: 29.5 MB/sec
Maximum: 84.9 MB/sec

Average: 66.4 MB/sec

Acces time: 13.8ms
Burst: 97.2 MB/sec
cpu usage 6.9%

i was actually doing something towards the end of the aaks test, so that is probably why it was slower than it should be. as for temps, ive got a fan on mine so i cant tell you much, but with 3 hdd's in front of a 1200m (slow) fan they are all ticking over at 27c

edit: and im not sure whats up with those burst rates either

cheers james was goin to mention burst speeds your 500gb seagate seems a tad on the slow side my 750-320s get over 66mb/s burst is also around 220 think there is somthing up with your sata controler.

sorry to mix things up a bit but... what about AAKS vs AAJS? obviously i know AAKS is better but im thinking of raiding a pair of either one and was wondering how much better it would be considering the price - i.e 2 x 80gb AAJS or 2 x 320gb AAKS. also, are there smaller AAKS drives available? - 2 x 80gb (space wise) would be fine...

As far as I'm aware the AAJS drives are just single platter variants of the AAKS drives so are only available as 80Gb (one side) and 160Gb (2 sides).
