720p viewing - which resolution

Just a quickie, would it matter much if I used the standard native resolution of the LCD TV that I have for 720p movies which is 1360x768, or should I be using 1280x720 resolution?

well, with a 720p source scaling is always going to be done somewhere. its usually always better to do any scaling on the pc using ffdshow. scaling 720p with ffdhow can be quite cpu intensive, but you shouldnt have any problems with that

Assuming your talking about a PC/HTPC then it will all depend on which is better at scaling. If the PC's set to 1360x768(should actually be 1366) then the PC will do the upscaling. If the PC outputs at 1280x720 the TV will upscale to the panels resolution.

Try both, and pick the one which you find gives the best picture?

As James says, using the PC as the scaler gives a lot more choices and options, ffdshow has a gazillion scaling options.

Nice one thanks guys, will go with native resolution and let the PC upscale. Just on the 1360(66?) matter, I've checked the resolution again it's definitely 1360x768 not 66.

1360x768 is the res of 720p hdtv's.

it isnt, its 1366x768.it shouldnt matter though, most if not all of the tv's well display 1360x768 1:1 and just leave a few pixels blank either side of the image.

1366x768 or 1360x768 is a LOT clearer than 1280x720 on my LCD

1366 is pinpoint sharp, and looks great

it is a lower range 720p screen, but hd content looks great on it

lol, look 1360x768 will look the same if you use just scan. using 4870 here, cant see 1366 option.

Playing HD DVDs on a 720p tv from a standalone player, is it better to let the player output 1080i (no 1080p since I didn't need a player capable) or downscale to 720p?

I'd set your DVD player to 480i/p 576i/p. Not 720p, otherwise it'll be scaling twice. 1080i will probably show jaggies.

Wouldn't that be wasting the quality of the hd dvd over a regular dvd though?

oops sorry didn't spot HD. Not sure, if you set to anything apart from native the HD player will downscale, then the display will upscale.

That's why 1920x1080 panels are a good idea.

How do you specify that 720p resolution though as it's not listed under the ATi control panel?
