72C 5870 under load normal?

yeah thats not too bad have you looked in the CCC and unlocked overclocking options if not ::?

There should be a little key icon click on it and you manually adjust the fan speed for the card

You can also download MSI afterburner which can do the same but has way more options

yeh got MSI afterburner. I may have fiddle with it later.

72 under load is allgood with NO overclock?

what fan speed have you got ?

When i had a 5 series card i used to have fan speed on 40-45% when gaming

72C after 2 hrs when running BC2 one of the most demaning pc games at the moment is pretty good i would say

ta. One remaining issue, the option to overclock the shaders is greyed out. Any ideas?

make sure the options where you unlocked the voltage there should be other options there tick them cant remember which.

Then click on the link button i think on the main display, dont really use afterburner

AMD's gpu all runs at the same speed, so you overclock the core you're overclocking the shaders, Nvidia uses(used) two clocks, for core and shader so you'd need to change them individually. THe Fermi cards use a single clock again rather than two individual ones, so Fermi should only let you change one clock.

72C is completely fine at stock, in general the fans are set to get more aggressive in speed very quickly from 80C upwards, but as long as the cards stay 75-80c and below it will tend to keep the fan very quiet.

Mine from recollection would stay around 27-30% fan speed up to around 80C, then as I overclocked and overvolted the fan speed increased to compensate so the temp effectively didn't increase as I overclocked, but realistically, just the fan starts working much harder. The fan's pretty damn quiet up to aroudn 30% somewhere, and in gaming with a lot of noise going on 32-34% was around where I set it while overclocked for a balance of temps/noise .
