Firstly, this is the spec that I'm thinking of building, I'll have the money to buy the parts on April 16th. I'm thinking of OC'ing the 2500k, but have never OC'd anything before:

OcUK Motherboard Bundle - Intel Core i5 2500K & Asus P8P67 Intel P67 Mainboard **B3 Revision** - £267.98

OCZ Platinum 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Ultra Low Voltage Dual Channel Kit (OCZ3P1600C9ELV4GK) [OCZ3P1600C9ELV4GK] - £36.98

x 2 Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 5850 Extreme 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card **OcUK Exclusive** [11162-15-20G] - £215.98 (already bought so I got them when they were cheap.)

Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (ST3500418AS) [ST3500418AS] - £29.99

OcUK 24x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM - £14.99 Note: I know absolutely nothing about optical drives, is this a good choice?

Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro Rev 2 CPU Cooler (Socket 939 / AM2 / AM3 / 775 / 1155/ 1156 / 1366) - £17.99 Will this be good enough for if I want to OC the 2500k?

Coolermaster CM-690 II Lite Dominator Case - Black [RC-692-KKN3] - £58.98

OCZ StealthXStream 2 700W Power Supply [OCZ700SXS2] - 57.98 I also know nothing about PSU's, is this enough/a good choice?

Total - £700.87 (still got some left if you guys think I need to improve a part!)

So does this look good enough for high-end (ish) gaming? i.e. I want to play most games on a high setting, not really bothered if there's 1 or 2 higher end ones it won't run because I'll buy them for my PS3!

Also, are there are good guides for OC'ing on this website, or in fact any other site? As I've heard the 2500k is particularly good for overclocking and may aswell if my MoBo/Cooler can handle it.

I may also invest in an SSD in the near future as I've heard these really speed up a system, but can I just ask, in what way do they do this? Being a bit dim when it comes to current tech I don't understand how storage can speed up a PC!

Thanks :D

swap out your mobo/processor bundle for the i5 2500k and another motherboard that isn't Asus. Other than that it looks good.

As for overclocking, I've not done it on the new i5/i7 chips yet, but it is apparently pretty easy to do.

if you are planning on using two cards in crossfire then you will want a motherboard that does x8/x8 or x16/x16 crossfire. the one you have selected doesnt do that.

i know the Asus P8P67 pro does, but theres been quite a few people who have had problems with that board, so go for a gigabyte, AS rock or MSI board (not sure which one will support crossfire properly though)

other than that it looks good

*edit*
made a build with the updated mobo and a modular PSU thats SLI/crossfire compliant.
with the graphics cards included, its a little over budget. you should be able to save the money by going for a non modular PSU thats SLI compliant, but im really not good on my PSUs, so this is the only one i know is good

Here is a good comparison of all the P67 ASUS, Gigabyte, MSI and ASROCK mobos. It's basically spec comparisons, nothing on performance, but thought you might be interested. Prices are a bit off (and they're in $ anyway) but it's the specs I was interested in.

Not too sure on the forum rules for linking out of OC but if this breaks any, let me know and i'll take it down.

The i5 2500k seems really overclockable

Will overclocking the CPU not shorten its life though?

After a little looking around on the internet, most people are saying you can't really know whether its lifespan is reduced or not.

If your keeping your system up to date, however, you shouldn't have a problem as you'll be changing your CPU long before its lifespan is over.

I don't really know myself, but that's the general gist of most peoples arguments.

Couple of threads about it:

What's your beef with the Asus mobos?

Seen you knock them a few times now without an explanation.
