right, this gpu upgrade needs to happen soonish.

currently using a radeon 5550 so, yeah its old and not a fast card. never used to game much so wanted fan less.

im currently looking at the EVGA 750Ti card. in part because my psu is only a 430w and amd cards seem to just eat power in comparison. i know for the same cash a 270x is possible but im not changing the psu so unsure it would work anyway.

the big issue right now is mantle. i know i will be playing Beyond Earth which shall be mantle compatible. so, would i be better waiting till it shows and maybe getting a 260x?

Buy Nvidia, rid yourself of those AMD chains.

Err Stulid..

Are you not breaking your own rules?

"After many RTM's concerning various threads in the GC subforum the moderators have decided on a zero tolerance approach.

Any more off topic rubbish, trolling, thread derailment will be meet with a suspension with no more warnings given.

If suspension doesn't work and it continues then access to this sub forum will be removed for the members causing problems.

If you think you are being singled out, picked on or anything else that could be considered "trolling" then just RTM it. Do not bite back, stay on the topic of the thread you are posting in."

What are the specifications of your system??

My Xeon E3 1220(basically a SB Core i5) and a GTX660 running off an XFX PRO 450W was lucky to see 200W at the wall when running 3DMark or during an intensive game.

You should be fine with an R7 265,R9 270 or GTX660.

Buy a GTX 970 ....;)

Graphics Card Power = 145watt

I don't think its a good idea to run a 970 off a 430 Watt PSU.

Maxwell does not draw continuous power levels like Kepler / GCN, instead it only pulls as much as it needs at the time, with that the TDP is measured in averages, not peak as they have been upto now.

The peak power consumption of the 980 is still about 200 Watts, thats for the reference ones, AIB ones with a small overclock can pull as much as 250 Watts, its simply that they don't pull that kind of power all the time, half the time 80 Watts and the other half 200 Watts, an average of 130 Watts.

I would think something like a 430 Watt PSU would get overloaded given that it has-to spend some time feeding it 250 Watt spikes.

I'm suggesting he buys Nvidia, plenty of price cuts recently on various models that he should be able to find one he can afford.

You dont have to quote rules to me, I am well aware of them.

Considering the OP is considering the R7 260X,GTX750TI and R9 270X that should tell you that their budget is around £90 to £130,and ultimately lots of the older AMD and Nvidia cards are having price cuts.

Anyway, its all a moot point until we know what CPU the OP has,as the earlier Civ5 is quite CPU intensive, and it would struggle after a few dozen hours on my SB Core i3 in large world maps, and there was noticeable performance improvements for me going to a SB Xeon E3 1220 and a IB Xeon E3 1230 V2.

Ultimately, with a weaker CPU,something like Mantle would probably be useful, but again Civilization: Beyond Earth is released at the end of next month anyway,so there should be some CPU and GPU tests with and without Mantle anyway.

If I were the OP,I would wait until the game is released.
