7600gt or 8600gt

Im in the same situation here

Heres the spec
e6420
DS4
2gb pc6400 Corsair RAM
Corsair 520w
and all the other usual stuff..ie DVD-rw etc

But, which one?
BFG GeForce 7600 GT OC 256MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail
or
BFG GeForce 8600 GT OC 256MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail

dont really want to increase costs so, its really out of these two. I was thinking about the 8600gt as its a DX10 card so maybe its more future proof. I will not be playing many games either. Mainly video/photo editing etc.

Thanks

I would say the 8600gt, you can get it here on OcUK for 70 now, and it has extra features, isn't going to do much for DX10 and it is better than the 7600gt in dx9.

thanks for that - i just wouldnt mind paying that extra £10 for a more future proof card. Ok, atleast its better than the 7600gt.
Really it's £5 more, so may aswell go for it.

i agree on this, go for the 8600gt, for 70 quid its damn cheapo now and iv read on other forums that the 8600gt really starts to shine in games like tombraider legend and marvel ultimate alliance when the next generation content is enabled.

i'm thinkin of gettin one of these or the gts version, now i have a x1900gt which is ok but i need a bit more poke which these cards will give for the money i've got to spend and will also give me dx10 to go with vista which i'm using.

BUT! and its a BIG BUT.

how will these cards perform using dx10?

1. is the real potential of these cards going to be shown.

or

2. are they going to be like the x1300 or 7600gs using dx9 which to put it nicely dont handle it very well unless everything is set low.

i play using the res of 1280x1024.

I definitely wouldn't bother going from a x1900gt to a 8600GT - bit of a sideways move really and the dx10 performance will likely be shocking.

Even the GTS isn't that great considering it's price so you would be much better off saving for the 8800GTS-320. The difference between that and the 8600GTS will likely be just as big as between the 8600GTS and the x1900gt.

In case you have missed it Guru3d have a review up at the moment of the EVGA superclocked 8600GT whereby the benchmarks show it against a 7600GT.

Interestingly in some cases the 7600GT is actually quicker.

Ordered the parts and most arrived today, just went for the 8600gt, is the OcUK brand Palit, or is Xpert Vision the make, as i've never heard of them.

Anyway, the point of this post was, is it worth putting some artic silver 5 on the 8600gt gpu? As on the back it has a sticker saying will void warranty if removed :( . As i plan to overclock it and the cpu for my mate.

Well i've not done anything to the fan on mine and it's clocking no fuss to 700mhz on the core. 70oC Max load.

We've not had a chance to overclock it yet, but it won't let me view monitor temperatures or overclock using coolbits? I can do it via rivatuner but i'd like to see temps first as he's taking it to his house tomorrow.

Any ideas why it won't let me using monitor temps?
