(Title change) Searching for a good AMD 939 MOBO

Hi,

I just upgraded my graphics card (to Connect3d x1800xt) but it wont fit in my Compaq micro ATX mobo, the power connector gets in the way (its a canny long card). So i've decided to upgrade my mobo too.

So, any recommendations for a S775, DDR, PCI-E mobo - with SATA and onboard sound?

Thanks,
slinky.

Also,
what chip is going in it?
are you considdering upgrading to conroe?
what RAM do you have? ( you have specified DDR... most intel boards only support ddr2 now)

need a lot more info please... full specs would be great

haha, i certainly did!

i have a P4 550 3.4Ghz 800Mhx FSB - i'd rather not have to upgrade my processor as well.

i have DDR ram and again, id rather not have to upgrade - thats why i posted, i was having trouble finding DDR ones

thanks for the fast replys,
slinky.

Surely just change the case? Maybe to this...
  • Antec NSK4400 Mini Tower Case - 380W SmartPower PSU (CA-052-AN) £41.07 incl. VAT
All cases can take mATX mobos (i think). PSU from old case might be tricky if not of ATX type (recommend you also change it if not because GFX might require more juice)

it hits the power connector on the mobo, the case has enough room
Right...
  • Asus P5GV-MX Intel 915GV Micro ATX (Socket LGA775) PCI-Express Motherboard (MB-136-AS) £58.69 incl. VAT - here

thanks for the suggestion.

does anybody know if the Connect3D X1800XT 256 PCI-E fits the suggested mobo? - i can see the power connector isn't in the way but the grx card has a meaty HSF on it, and im worried about the chipset heatsink

thanks.

Forget fitting  I've just seen the PCI-E x16 slot only runs at x4 speeds. GFX should work but I wonder how running at 2GB/s will affect it performance wise  :(

Considered selling some PC parts & doing a 'meaningful' upgrade? Only reason I ask is because I wasted money/years/etc upgrading a HP PC when I could have sold it off & built a better one for less money than the upgrades (which I eventually did) :)

Well, having spent some time considering the small hole I seem to have got my self into, I've pretty much come to the decision of shelling out the extra money to replace the Mobo and CPU.

I'm looking to swap from Intel to AMD and i'm considering the AMD Athlon 64 3700+. How would this compare to my current CPU (P4 550 3.4GHz 800 FBS)?

Also, any suggestions on a good Mobo for this type of CPU. I'm pretty open to suggestions at this moment so long as it has PCI-E, SATA and DDR memory.

Still keeping the case?

The 3700+ should be 'faster' but you can compare them here... THG's Interactive CPU Charts

Thanks for the link, I'll have a look through and compare them.

As for the case, I allready upgraded my original compaq case a few weeks back to an Antec Lanboy case along with a new FSP Sparkle AX500-A Blue Storm 500W PSU.

Really, once I get the mobo and CPU upgraded then most of the original compaq will have been replaced.

Yep, I am sure never to buy a factory built PC again. Shame I never ventured out into building/modding my PC untill a few weeks ago, would have saved a lot of money in the long run. Oh well, live and learn.

Sorry if this sounds newby or the sort but do ASrock do AMD boards at all. I know Conroe is Intels new CPU but I really wan't to avoid buying another Intel CPU since it will mean upgrading my DDR RAM.

Since I don't wan't to be DDR 2 memory, trying to find a worthy Intel Mobo which supports DDR memory has proved hard, thus the reason why I wan't to change to an AMD CPU.

The ASRock 775 TWINS HDTV R2.0 will run DDR or DDR2 RAM and it will run your graphics card and existing processor too.

When you are ready you can go Conroe on that board as well.

The board looks ok, but I'd really like to avoid another Micro ATX board. Besides, having thaught about it I'm going to go ahead and overhaul the original components of the compaq.

Keeping this in mind, anybody have any further recomendations for a 939 board to go with an AMD Pentium 64 3700? So far I've been looking at the, Asus A8R-MVP Crossfire and Asus A8R32-MVP Deluxe Crossfire. Any thaughts?

Thanks,

Slinky.

I would strongly suggest you go Conroe for your next processor. Or, at the very least, wait until 25/7/06 when AMD have stated they will SLASH the price of their processors.

Conroe is a real step forward in processors. All other processors are worth less once Conroe launches. By waiting 3 weeks you will save yourself a good bit of money - probably enough to buy a graphics card or motherboard.

Thanks, I'm thinking about dropping the idea of getting an AMD Athlon 64 3700+, keeping my current P4 550 and instead upping my 1 Gig DDR to 2 GIG DDR2 and a then upgrading my MOBO. This way, I have the RAM upgrade to 2 gig, the MOBO upgrade to accomodate my new GFX and I can then have the possiblity to upgrade my P4 550 to a Conroe Dual Core at a later date when I have a little more finance since I no longer have the DDR restriction.

What do you think?

It's certainly a reasonable proposition. There are several very good S775 motherboards in the B-grade section of the OcUK store at the moment. A lot of people are wary of the B-grade section, but high risk/high rewards applies and there are some fantastic bargains on there. And the main risk as I see it is the lack of an I/O shield as it seems to be the most popular omission from the B-grade boards.
