I'm in the process of upgrading my computer, only awaiting a Opteron CPU (Missed the hype completely) and RMA'd memory (Ballistix for the lose).

I have bought a 7800GT and am really excited about Transparency Antialiasing.

Do you use it and do you use Multisampling or Supersampling?

Or is the performance hit too big in most games?

Multisampling is descent IQ and pretty fast
Supersampling is the best IQ but you can take a big with performance in some games. From memory BF2. It does vary.

Suck it and see and use profiles for each game.

I think these options are in the Nvidia Display properties on the desktop.

If this is the case, does changing a setting in the control panel such as the one you mention have any effect when you're playing the game? I thought it only takes effect in Windows?

I've always had it on Supersampling for the best IQ. Never seen any major performance problems in games, F.E.A.R, BF2, NFS:MW, HL2, etc and that's with AA\AF on top. This is on a GTX btw.

I saw comparisons between the two and multisampling isn't even worth having on half the time as it doesn't work *that* well. For me its either off or on (Super). :)

(I think those links are ok) ;)

Does Trans AA still work if AA is set to application controlled in the driver settings and AA is set in the games options?

Yup, it works along side "normal" AA and just offers improved IQ. For me, I have AA\AF set to App. Controlled and this to Supersampling. I don't know technically what it does different to AA, but I'm sure google would explain what it does. :)

Supersampling always enabled for me. I see no great loss in performance but a noted increase in quality.

I use multisampling, but see a much bigger difference in medium-> high image quality overal than medium+supersampling. so i use High IQ and MS TAA.

I only really play BF2 and CSS and performance is quite important to me, but if anything its a system limiation for me as my poo monitor is limited to 1280x1024@60z, or at a decent refresh rate, 1152x864@75hz
