7800GT(X) Transparancy Antialiasing, do you use it?

How much of a hit does transparency AA cause in games, and is it really a noticable effect?
I tested a few games and with Trans AA on the framerate halved in Serious Sam 2 amd NFS MW also was very jerky, BF2 wasn't any noticable performance hit.

Hmm so NFSMW was very jerky. Just looking at your rig I would have thought it would have hardly made an impact as it doesn't make it jerky on mine. (3800+ @2.75Ghz, 1Gb RAM, 7800GTX 256Mb) Mind you I do get slight slow downs now and again but I believe that's because of the game as other people get that as well with well above spec rigs. ;)

What AA level have you tried Transparency AA with and what kind did you use, Supersampling or Multisampling?

I use Supersampling TAA, with 4x AA & 16x AF in BF2 @ 1600 x 1200 (high detail on everything) on 7800GTX SLi.

It looks & performs great.

Highly recommended.

Multisampling does bugger all tbh which is why it has little performance penalty. Supersampling is awesome but has a big penalty when it is being used. That's the crucial point though. It only really works on specific things. It'll have an effect on foliage and chain-link fences and not much else. Playing a game like Far Cry with all it's foliage means you suffer a big hit for the first part of the game as the Supersampling is being utilised, and then it has no affect on appearance for the later, indoor stages.

Enabling SS on COD2 was similar as performance was great, (because it wasn't doing anything), for most of the game and then occassionally you reached a grassy/bushy level and everything would crawl to a slideshow. (Although a very nice looking one) :p

Half-life 2 and CS:S are good to use it with as the only time SS is utilised is when there are chain-link fences in view. As these fences never fill the screen the SS isn't having to do too much and doesn't have a huge penalty. The SS fences look great too! :D

Because of all this i only use TSS AA with games that are largely set in Urban areas with chain-link fences!
