I really would like to upgrade my 7800GTX to something newer but I'd have to sell the 7800GTX off to fund a newer card. I was thinking of a 7950GT or something similar. I wouldn't mind buying second hand so is there anything better I should be considering, especially ATI as I really have no idea what they have out atm.

Asus A8N SLi
AMD64 3700+ @ 2.72GHz
Patriot 2GB PC3200 2-3-2-5
POV 7800GTX @ 490/1.30

I doubt I could afford it though.

I was thinking about the 8600 range, when they're out, as the 8800 would be to expensive although I just read about the price cuts in February so maybe I should wait till then?

Would the DX10 cards work in my XP machine? I'm assuming they won't scine they're not backwards compatitble.

A consideration, if your not going to wait for an 8800/8600 class GPU... as you already have an SLI motherboard (and hopefully a good enough PSU) would be to get a couple of 7900GS or GT cards and SLI them, most GS and GT cards have some decent overclocking headroom - giving very good bang for the buck and theres little that doesn't take full advantage of SLI... and depending on the cards you choose it wouldn't cost any more than a 7950GT... and give much better performance.

The 7800 GTX is still a great card , i went for the 8800 GTS version ;) had not had the chance the overclock it yet

What was the change like? I'll probably wait for the 8800 price cuts and get one. Should be good. :D

8800GTX prices are dropping nicely, £364 at the mo and likely to drop a fair bit more when ATI release their new card.
Wouldnt surprise me if they £300 by March/April.

If I can pick up a 8800gts for £200 I'll go for it. :D

Just wondering but whats your 7800gtx struggling with?I have 256MB version 450/1250 and it run's most of stuff i throw at it at 1920/1200 .
BF2 1920/1200 smooth highest settings 4AA
Half Life 2 / Counterstrike source 1920/1200 smooth 8AF 4AA HDR
Prey 1600/1200 Jerky in places but playable
Hl2 Lost coast 1920/1200 8AF 4AA HDR Smooth in places but in the church when you shoot the windows out it can get pretty jumpy but still playable.

Imo the 7800gtx has atleast another 4-6 months left in it till it looks like a ati 9600pro trying to play halo :p :)

I don't think I could play any of those at that res! Most things I run at 1240x1024 but newer games like Rainbow 6 vegas and splinter cell I've had to run at 1024x800

Maybe it's my CPU that's letting me down?

What drivers are you using?
Whats your 3Dmark 06 score?

Your CPU should be fine(Nice overclock btw!)

I use to have a AMD 3500+ @ 2.4GHz 939 2GB ddr 400 with my 7800gtx that I'm using now, Like yourself in some games my 7800 wasnt proforming aswell as i hoped, Mainly battlefield 2.This is with my old monitor aswell with native res of 1280/1024.Since I moved to intel and my new dell monitor I thought I might have to upgrade my card but if anything it ran smoother :D In BF2 I use to get slowdowns in certain areas but with my new rig with same gpu and higher res monitor its smooth
Maybe its the faster ddr2 ram?

PS

I've just overclocked my gtx at 490/1300, Will run 3Dmark 06 when I've downloaded it to see if its similar to yours.

I just installed the 93.71 drivers and got 2007 at stock in 3dmark 06! My previous stock score was 4000something and I remember getting much more when my card was overclocked!

For some reason coolbits is acting funny aswell. The memory used to be 1.30 and now it's 2.40GHz standard?

thats because Rainbow 6 Vegas, and Splinter Cell are crap, its nothing to do with your gfx card or your CPU, those games run **** no matter what card you have, Ubiport strike again.

personally wait till more DX10 cards releised.

8800's will drop in price im sure of it, and the ati R600 core will be awsome.

there isnt much difference between 7800 and 7950, iv overclocked my 7800gtx (check my sig) and its fine for 98% of games on full detail at 1680x1050 res.

for what its worth dont go for the 7950 just overclock to higher speeds so that your card is neer enough as good as a 7950 or go for a 8800 or ati x1950 range :)
