I was having a weird issue with my PC over last two days, my pc temps was at 51c idle in Windows which is fine, but last few days at 71c idle on every reboot (this is with 3x140mm case fans, 120mm rear) , BIOS stated 43C so something in Windows was causing the issue, turns out it was Windows Defender, so I replaced that with free third party AV Avira, temps down to low 52c with air cooler. Gaming 62-66c with silent fan mode with Starfiled.

I tried everything in BIOS ie -25 negative on power curve, fans adjustments both auto and manual. Thermal limit set manually to 83c and all the time it was Defender, plus Defender was using 11% cpu. I've 64GB of ram as well.
I swear Defender in Win11 is the worst crap ever.... Little rant by me. :)

Amazing what a simple AV can do to your PC.

Update: Stabilized at 49/50c idle in Windows, Bios reports 42c so all good.

I'm using Deepcool AG500 air cooler , seems ok in the system, never had it go too high even with stress testing ie Cinebench 2024 etc , also no crashes.

I reset the curve optimizer to "Auto " and no change in temps. Biggest issue was Defender, it's been fine since I use third party av, funny thing is the system was at 49c/ 50c for first week or so then jumped up to 71c idle in Windows, changed antivirus problem solved.

Still cool 42c temp when in BIOS. Idle temps now in Windows goes from 47c to 50c range, so seems ok to me.

In 10 or 11 sometimes Defender gets its knickers in a twist trying to update definitions in the background and will use 100% of one core either until you reboot or forever until you manually purge/rollback...

It was like that for a few days so had a few reboots, I turn my pc off at night and even reboot during the day ie for drivers of if required by Windows, very strange issue, only thing I've done is update BIOS and no way that would make Windows idle at 71c.

Anyway all seems good now and gaming ie Starfield goes from 54c - 65c in general so seems ok, it's well within safe limit of 7800X3D, I kept the thermal limit to 83c to be on safe side.

Btw I was playing SWTOR today and that stayed around 54c, not as demanding as Starfield.

Maybe have a check of the rest of your background apps and see if there is anything else that is pushing the temps up?

I had the gigabyte control centre always adding 4-5c on my 7 series CPU. Since stopping that on startup I idle mid 30's now.

Sounds like your temps are in good range now anyway, particularly at day2day gaming load, but tinkering is fun.

Come winter I'm reconsidering adding some wasteful apps back to startup again... keep the room warm :p

I had that with win 10, had to delete its DB file, after that it was fine. Cannot remember the file location/name though.

Update: I had to do a clean reinstall Win11 today due to activation issue ( Even Microsoft could not fix it remotely).

You can read it here on last page 188 , https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/threads/microsoft-windows-11-thoughts-discussion-thread.18929899/page-188 thanks to 23H2 build that messed my activation up, anyway on reinstall of Win11 tonight the same thing happened with Defender ie made my temps go 70c at idle, installed my third party AV and again temps dropped between 47c and 50c iidle, so Defender is staying disabled until I know they have sorted out the issue with CPU temps.

I miss Win10 , never had these issues, I'm thinking of going back if this keeps happening.

Tommorrow I 'll reinstall some of my apps and games that got wiped, hope the issue is sorted now, no fun waiting on the phone for over 2 hours wait trying to get through to Microsoft and only solution they have is remove 11 and start over when all their activation attempts failed, only good thing I got out of it is "yes your key is legit", well I could have told them that lol..
Bottomline Defender is not playing nice with my 7800X3D and two clean installs so it stays disabled, between that and my activation issue makes me wish I almost go back to console gaming lol.

Just checked my Win11 which states the key is still activated. Staying on 22621.2428 build for now.

Little rant by me, good to get it off your chest as they say ;) .

Ah but you've got to move with the times and all that ;)

I don't mine moving with the times but miss the old days when things just worked, it's like the software programmers and testers have forgotten how to make things just work and be stable period. This brings back nightmares of infamous VIA 4 in 1 driver days lol.
Bedtime now real tired.
