7850 overclocking question

I own the MSI, it's a lovely card, but atm it's overpriced compared to other brands.

When I got mine at launch it was £199. Since then it's jumped up a tenner, and other custom cooled cards have been sold at a much lower price (e.g. the HIS atm), and the stock cooled cards have been sold considerably cheaper (VTX for £166 the other day).

£25 (TFIII)/£35 (Power Ed) is a big chunk of cash extra on a card that will probably be just the same performance as the HIS one.

*shrug* End of the day its your money, but personally I don't think it's worth the extra.

I have a sapphire 7850

To be honest, most people get around 1150 overclock which is still great.

If I was buying now, I'd get this

ok, so it's £50 more but it's a 7870 so instantly 10% quicker and it has a better cooler. More importantly for me is the fact that it's a large single fan sat at the end of the card. Ideal for anyone in a small case who is thinking about crossfire in the future. Most of the fual fan designs have issues with the bottom ard blowing hot air on top of the PSU.

I'd bet that this card will overclock better than the 7850s. Decent cooler, extra power cable, and I have a feeling a lot of 7850 are speed binned 7870s anyway. Having a full fat 7870 'probably' means a decent chip to start with.

Thanks for the advice guys.

Hex, that HIS 7850 is reasonably affordable for me and I think I'll go for it. If I was able to get a maximum of 33% overclock/1150 core, where does that put the card in relation to higher spec cards? The goal is to get to stock 7950 speed. Is 1150 somewhere between 7870 and 7950?

Also, I've got one of these lying around doing nothing,

http://www.thermalright.com/new_a_page/product_page/vga/hr03gt/product_vga_cooler_hr03gt.htm

still attached to my old 4870, just sitting on a table collecting dust.

I know it's limited on it's card compatibility, but given it's design and fin clearance, do you think it might fit a 7850? Even if it did, how good are the custom coolers fitted to the cards compared to aftermarket coolers like the Thermalright HR-03-GT? I never overclocked my 4870, but, this cooler took my 4870 down from 85c load to mid 40's. I also fitted VRM heatsinks to the 4870.
