Hey,

Was wondering whether the 7870 is worth around the £30/40 premium on the 7850? Most benchmarks seem to show it has a considerable lead in most games.

At the moment it will be in a 4/5 year old system with a Q6600 and at 1440x900, but I should be upgrading that in the next few months, so I want something that will be future proof for a good few years ideally.

I'm not comfortable with overclocking, so assume I won't do that either

Thanks.

how hard is it to move the core clock and memory clock slider in ccc to max? thats what you can do with the 7850,i dont think the 7870's are worth the price imo

Get the HD 7850, it'll run anything maxed out at your current resolution with playable frame rates and when you do upgrade to a higher res. Maybe 1080/1200p, you can overclock it. 1100mhz on the core clock is a damn near guarantee on the HD 7850.

Without a doubt, the 7850.

Fair enough, any brand better than the others?

i think ones with the twin small fans/aftermarket coolers would be best,as to a good clocker thats clocking with unlocking/adjusting voltages its a lottery really, anybrand would do,if you dont to do that and just max ccc limits then could look at the his single fan cards?

They all seem pretty similar, just slightly different clocks. If overclocking is as easy as sliding a slider in the CCC, then I may as well get the slightly cheaper Sapphire one, even if it does have the lowest clocks out the box.

Also, the Gigabyte 7870 OC Windforce 3x is only £220 at the moment...I would would rather pay the £20 extra for the extra 25% stream processors than the overpriced 7850.

Some people here most likely not aware of the latest prices...if anything, the 7850s are more expensive than before, as they were at times at £170~ range, but now they are all at £180~£190+ on average.

For the difference I'd get the Giga 7870 for £220. It's an absolute steal at that price.

Most people got 7850's previously as the price difference between them and the 7870's was huge (at launch around £90 difference!). Now, for the sake of £20 I'd have the 7870.

I agree with hex. Before the price gap was large with a smallish performance difference. Now its a small price gap, its probably worth finding the extra for the 7870 if its only £20 more or so. Very good price on that wind force.
