Just wondering what you guys think the launch price will be for the 7870? I assume it will pretty much remain at the launch price for months? I need to keep some money away for one ya see :)

Depends on wafer price, as always, if TSMC have decided to charge $6k per wafer instead of $5k, it won't be pretty, till we know where they are with die size though, who knows.

The chip isn't the entire cost, 20% just to the core price going up could add as little as $10 to a 7870, maybe a lot more.

I wouldn't be surprised to see around £300 for the 7970, £230-240 7950, 7870/50, who knows, have to see how close it is to 7970 performance, same gap as 6970/6870 then it would be £180-200, if its 50-60% faster, we might get £150 much smaller 7870's this time around.

Inflation hits 4.5%, GBP exchange rate drops below 1.5 and further and you can wave goodbye to all sensible predictions on pricing of a graphics card being released next year.

The 5770 = 6870 = 7870
The 5770 was £120~ upon release.
Given that the UK economy has weakened in real terms since 2008 and the exchange rate has taken a big hit lately which will only get worse due to the latest QE I predict the 7870 will cost £170-210.
7970 = £400
7990 = £850

:(

That's the card I want

The UK launch pricing will depend on five things:

  1. Initial RRP set by AMD in the US market.
  2. Dollar to pound exchange rate at the time of allocating the stock.
  3. Demand and stock numbers.
  4. UK retailers' merciless mark-ups.
  5. VAT

I can tell you the first doesn't usually change by much, even though it should be the biggest factor of the four. The second usually fluctuates between £0.62-0.645 but from what we've seen lately, it can go as high as it wants, unfortunately for us.

Demand will be probably pretty high, afaik Nvidia doesn't have their new graphics cards ready yet and that means that AMD will completely dominate the market like with the 5800s launch. Stock numbers and allocation? There always seems to be a problem with that.

Retailers' mark up will be high, very high. But there are enough competitors to shop around and grab a bargain if you're witty enough.

We know what the current VAT rate is so that's a no mystery.

The rest you should be able to calculate yourself, if not, I can recommend some good secondary schools.

PS one other factor that you may need to take into account is how many models will AMD release at the same time. It will also affect the initial pricing.

I also like to think what the prices should be not what they will be.

The difference is that I can tell whether I'm getting ripped off when buying the card or not.

My guesstimate, 7870 will be about 6950 price, 7950 will be about £280, 7970 £350.

I'm basing my guess on 5 series prices as Krugga said there may be no competition from Nvidia so Amd and e-tailers can charge a premium for the fastest tech, just like they did when there was no DX 11 competition from Nvidia for a few months.

If the above prices materialise, then my 6950>70 xfire setup for £410 was a wise decision as it should be about 7970 performance.

No humor allowed, just serious answers apparently

Here's my serious guestimates

7850 - £120
7870 - £170
7950 - £230
7970 - £330
7990 - £699
I'll go with this, depending on the usualy caveat of that it's actually a decent series of cards and not a donkey.
