Ive held off buying a new gpu since I got my 6800gt sli set up and was planning on going for the next card released after the 7900 because people were saying that these will be dx10 cards and thats what card will be needed to run games like crysis and also vista will be dx10. Reading through the specs for the 7900 cards though it states next to all of them that these cards have been designed for vista? Im getting a bit  over this, How long have we got till dx10 games are going to be in circulation then?
does this mean if I got a 7900 it wont run games being released in dx10 very well

thanks

It isn't a DX10 card. It will run dx10 games in dx9, just like a Geforce4 runs DX9 games in DX8. It'll run all these future games fine, but you'll be missing out of a few effects here and there.

I'd stick with your SLI rig, its not as if it slow... Wait for Vista and DX10, buy a whole new setup in Dec or something.

Gotta be the first time in a while that people are talking about newly released gfx cards in terms of old technology :p

I would be wary about upgrading to vista, microsoft is planning that users dont have much control on how and what they do with their PCs with DRM (digital rights management) which conflicts heavily with the emergence of HDTV; and the idea that the pc with replace the tv in the living room.

Personally I wouldnt upgrade my os for a single game, they will just lose my money if developers choose to make games OS specific.

its just the way we have to think now considering the speed of new releases of hardware and software for the pc, I find it really hard deciding when to take the plunge and upgrade, Im not loaded and I have to save quite hard for my upgrades so I have to make them count. Every time I think about upgrading there is something else on the horizon that wont be comptable with what im about to buy, I think lanz has got the right idea, Im now thinking of hanging on till vista then building a complete new system with the money ive saved by not upgrading fo a while ;) I can then keep my existing pc on xp for a while just in case vista is as bad as everyone is saying.

Dual boot?

GPUs have shot ahead of actual game engine requirements anyway, unless you have a big screen, a 7800GT will play everything u throw at it. We need some new games to use all this pixel shading power, but there's been bugger all out lately and there's not much out in the near future that interests me niether.

Agreed todays games arn't coded well enough to make use of all the current gen of cards power.

It does seem to be a bit of a lull at the moment.

I know oblivion is around the corner but I will get that on the 360.

Well Stalker aint gonna be anything special graphics wise.. it would have been if it came out when it was supposed to. Quakewars is about the only thing I'll be buying that might need beefy graphics, but chances are the old 6800GT will still work good with it, what with it being Doom3 engine.

Yeah im really looking forward to QWET I read in the pc mags that splash damage are using something called ''Brute force rendering'', actual name lol, and ''mega texturing'' which gives unlimited viewing distances and great graphics which will be playable on a mid ranged gpu, whatever that will be in a years time is anyones guess though? also Crysis looks really good.

seems that with the consoles the developers make better use of the gpu that the system uses over time, they dont get chance with a pc gpu though and have to cater for a lot of different system specs :(

I read that QW will have a single (mega texture?) which maps to the entire map's terrain, sounds like it will need a fair size memory to run.
