Hey,

I have a 7900xt and 5800x along with 32gb ram; currently it’s able to play everyrging at pretty much highest settings on 1440p.

I’ve been eyeing up a 32” 4k OLED monitor and was wondering whether my set up would be able to handle it, or whether a CPU upgrade would be needed?

I’m hoping not but if a 5800x3d or even 5700x3d would make the difference, then I could do that.

What do you reckon?

7900 XT should have no problem at 4K, but you might have to turn down the eye candy a little.

I wouldn't bother with a CPU upgrade if you're happy with the framerate consistency right now.

Sounds good.

What about if I was to use up-scaling? Is that GPU or CPU based?

I got the 7900xt on the basis that it would do 1440p no problem so never really had to think about up-scaling, clocking etc.

Hopefully I’d plan on upgrading with the next generation AM6 CPUs and maybe 5090 / Radeon equivalent

Certainly 7900xt can run at 4k but i prefer a 34" in 3440x1440 for games

I do have a 34" widescreen (1440p though) on my sim rig. When I've used it for general gaming I'm not so convinced. There are some games I imagine it would be great for (including the sim racing) but for most, I find the aspect ratio off putting as there isn't enough height.

My 6800XT is coping admirably well with my new 1440p UW monitor, only takes a few tweaked settings and a spot of upscaling in some titles to get a decent frame rate.

The 7900XT should perform ok at 4K with tweaks and upscaling: at that res FSR2 does a good enough job in the titles I played on my TV prior to getting this monitor.

That’s good to know; it’s a £1200 gamble if it doesn’t work!

Not really as you can always send back your monitor for a refund if your not happy within 14 days. I bought the Dell Alienware AW3225QF recently I highly recommend it. It's cheaper than 1200 and they are excellent at refunds and cover.
Good point on the refund. I've been looking at the Alienware; it seems a really good price vs the others. The screens in them all are essentially the same? So it's firmware, other non-screen benefits like USB and ergonomics / style?

Slight curve on the Dell but it's really not noticeable during gaming and general usage. It's a great screen.
The 34” dell widescreen I have also had a slight curve; I quite like it for gaming. Not sure about it for work, but like you say it’s not significantly curved so probably won’t be noticeable
