7900GTO Quick Question

Really quick and simple answer needed

Got a friend wanting to buy a 7900GTO considering how good the price is, but, he was considering flashing the bios to run it as a Quadro. We've found a Quadro4500 bios (identical specs to the 7900GTO in terms of memory and stuff) I know this has been done on previous models as I remember seeing it on the forums a while back.

But just to be sure before he whips the card out, is there a good chance of him being able to do this?

Haven't really looked into this since the GF2 days, but it used to be worthwhile because Quadro cards could run a few extra OpenGL calls or something like that.

I got one and I wanted to make people aware of a few things..

1. Its huge and very heavy, you will lose two SLOTS

2.It might have been mu windows install but I had to totally rebuild windows as it simply would not boot up, thought it was a PSU issue, but I have been gaming with it using the same one (Hiperpower 460)

3)Unless you have a huge monitor (I dont) this is probably overkill)


Other than that nice card and very quiet. Lots quieter than my 7900gt extreem.
Mines the MSI version, does anyone know about this "trade up your card dreal" and if MSI ofer it, their site is poo and doesnt say much?

The reason for flashing to a Quaddro is not increased clocks (if anything, pro cards are clocked lower for extra stability) nor is it for games performance (again, the equivalent card is likely to perform worse).
The purpose is to utilise the Quaddro drivers, which offer custom profiles & greatly enhanced perfomance & stability in Open GL based 3D apps. 3DS Max, Maya & XSI for example.
To the OP - Although this was popular & fairly painless in the past with the 6800 GT/ 9800 Pro days, it's a lot harder now because no one is writing the software now. You have to do your research really carefully & may have to do several steps.
A good place to look for info on modding recent cards to Quaddro is CG Talk's technical & hardware forum. You'll have to search. Good luck.
Also, for these types of application with a gaming card, an NVidia card is a must as the ATI drivers Radeon drivers don't support some of the advanced Open GL app features & offer worse performance even from more powerful cards.
