7900X to a 9800X3D worth it?

Hey guys,

Keep going back and forth on a X3D chip. Would this be worth the upgrade? I dont do any productivity, just gaming.

This is running well but wonder if the extra Cache is worth it?

sorry, should have mentioned that..

I game at 1440p 240Hz..

and the FPS are decent, but since my new GPU everything is smooth as butter, even when frames "tank"..

For an example, I ran the benchmark on Shadow Of The Tomb Raider, and got this... (sorry about the quality)

Worth it is a hard thing to define. Is your CPU perfectly fine right now? Yeah. Would you see a benefit in some games that love the cache? Sure.

I mean, a 5090 is "worth it" for me, but would I buy one? No :D

You'll definitely see a bump in the numbers at that resolution, but whether it's noticeable is another matter.

I'd probably wait for the next generation. A 7900X and a 4070ti is a pretty balanced combo.

yeah. i see where your coming from.

hmm.. yeah, its running sweet atm, i dont want all the hassle if im going to get a modest upgrade that i cant notice.

oh no 233. that's a powerpoint presentation lol

Save your money buy some speakers or something.

I'm not up to speed on AMD platforms but you could potentially get a boost from tuning your RAM if you haven't already and it's a capable kit.

thanks, i have a good speaker setup atm, but i see your point :)

interesting, I have the RAM stock atm, its not the fastest though, only 5600Mhz..

You'll see a slight boost in performance, which will be game dependent. Really comes down to whether you view a £300+ net spend ( assuming you sell your 7900X ) as worth it or not. A more frugal/rational choice would be to wait for the next generation of AMD chips.

yeah, its perfectly fine, I just thought there might be a drastic improvement for gaming, but will probably hold out if the gains are not going to be a game changer (pardon the pun).

Definitely won't be drastic, bar one or two edge cases eg. MSFS 2020/24. Most games are GPU bound, not CPU bound at 1440p and 4K.

You may lose some performance outside of games if that concerns you, though it is generally less than 10% difference, but I was watching someone benchmarking a bunch of CPUs recently including the 7900X3D (not the regular X) and in some newer games against the 9800X3D there is a big difference in the minimum FPS in some situations even though the average FPS might not be hugely different - in some situations the limits of 6 core and/or cross CCD communications (not sure which is in play) is having noticeable impact.
