Hello,

Heres the dilema: I am sitting on the fence with this upgrade, I have a 1440 monitor currently using 2x 7950 and giving good fps in BF4 (60+ at high settings) but below 30 in other games such as Project Cars.

I woudl really like 60+ in all games at ultra settings and this seems a bit of a reach for the 7950 CF. So, I thought I would CF 290X and get the boost I need with a bit of future proofing thrown in.

My rig is quite tight on space but the 7950s run at 60deg under load so seem to have cooling sorted.

So the questions:
1. will 2x 290x give me my desired fps?
2. is a 750w PSU enough (runs 2x7950 without issues)
3. Do 290x run cooler or hotter than a 7950?

I hope you can help, or at least tell me I am insane and should stop looking at expensive shiny GPUs :D

Thanks :)

What's your CPU?

Your 7950s seem to be under performing - my single 7950 runs BF4 ultra (msaa off & post processing high) 2560x1440 at 60fps with mantle

they will be a lot more powerful but use a lot more power and will need 1000w psu also they will run a good bit hotter than your 7950's

I agree with Mr May I have r290x in xfire and my power supply is corsair 850watts which is not enough to run them together.

I got by running 290P cards at stock and overclocked up to 1100/1400 on a gold XFX 750W psu. It was far from ideal though and any higher and the pc would turn itself off. Since going to a 1000W Superflower PSU ive been up at 1270W and the psu didn't bad an eyelid. 1000W recommended, but you can get by on lower if needs be.

Thank you for the replies. Sounds like my magpie wants are going to be limited by my PSU then :(

I am running an i5 2500K, which is at 4ghz currently. It has been a dream configuration to date, but my setup just doesnt seem to like the higher res screen - and I really hate throttling back games to lower settings, seems like a waste :) Small price to pay I suppose, cos the screen is beautiful!! So much res!!

I will wait until I do a full system refresh, dont want to be repalcing sys baord, CPU and PSU, not yet anyway. Really apprecaite you taking the time to reply though.

I'd get 2x 290s and put the money saved from not going to the X variants into either a new PSU fund, or a CPU/mobo fund.
