7950 Crossfire vs 680 SLI at 5760*1080 (Eyefinity/Surround)

I've just bought 2 7970s and I'm wondering if I shoulda gone with 2 670s instead...
7970s will preform better I expect, but they seem to be more hassle with DP->DVI adaptors etc.

Not to mention the issues with X79 and eyefinity.

Did i do the right thing? 2 7970s for £620 (+ ~ £95 for adaptors) or 2 670s for £564.

I worry that despite the better framerates people say Nvidia cards are smoother?

Do I DSR the 7970s, take the hit of the cost of sending them back and get the 670s?

Why did you get 2 adapters mate ? I used one which was like £20 !

Ive gotten round the Eyefinity / X79 / CF and TF issues by using the RC11 drivers until AMD pull their finger out and sort it

Having said that ive gone (temporarilly) single screen with the 12.11 drivers for benching :D

670's are going to perform quite badly compared to 7970's over triple screen. I only noticed a very slight lowered smoothness when compared 7950 vs 680 but that could have just been me looking for something without any way to measure it.

I thought I needed 2 to get all 3 120Hz screens working?
I'm sure I asked about which adaptor to get, but nobody responded (or I meant to ask but forgot).

And yes, wanted reference cards possibly for watercooling, but also as they're recommended (by Silverstone) for the TJ11.

Oh, not sure with them being 120Hz screens

I have 2 screens with HDMI to DVI-D adapters (which came with the cards) and 1 DVI-D to DP adapter (active) and it seems to work OK (only 60Hz screens)

I just got a £22 active adapter from a competitor

Got my 2 7970 working in eyefinity on the same mobo,
using 12.11 drivers and latest CAPS.:)

Took a clean install of windows to get it to work.

Didn't want to jump in a say it works perfect as I've only had it running
since Tuesday lunch time.

Over 8 hours of BF3,Sleeping Dogs and Crysis 2 no lockups, freezes or crashes to speak of.:)
As for smoother,it looks good to me

Will post back if any issues develope

Hope this helps

^^ great news, glad its all working well :D

I would always suggest a clean install for such a big hardware change anyway, seems to solve most software problems although it is a PITA.

Should've done that straight away instead of being a
smart arse and not wasted 2 days peeing about. :(

Like you say software issue,
going slowly through reinstalling all my
programs and windows updating to see if anything creates a prob.

As I said so far so good :)

Good news, now just pop a third in and let me know if it still works ;):D as I want to order 3 but want some sign that they'll work with drivers later than RC11.

Good to hear Neil and phew :) I thought it was screwed untill AMD or Asus released a fix.

Rusty0611, can you honestly tell any difference in image quality using AMD, and Nvidia with current generation cards, using a decent amount of AA/AF, or whatever is best?

Just read about the half frames in side displays using SLI - afaik this only applies to 3d surround. Drivng 3monitors at full res and 120hz is a tall order for any setup still so with 3d the frame reduction on the side panels allows the middle one to run at 120 consistently.

This is what I read in some nvidia driver release notes - I have not tried it myself.

The memory issue on the 680 was well documented and discussed in all the reviews I read but when running 3 monitors in portrait rather than landscape (3600x1920) no AA is needed ;P I tried landscape but it did not agree with me. Looks awesome in pics but when sitting in front of it, portrait was the way to go for me. Too bad so many gamers buy cheap 22" and 23" without adjustable stands so they can't try it

But then that'd break 3D wouldn't it? So it couldn't be true.
