7950 - Far Cry 3 fps dropping?

Hi guys,

Playing Far Cry 3 with my new 7950 and it's a really beautiful game. When playing I get a solid FPS but every 5 seconds or so the frames will drop to almost 30 FPS. It makes the game feel like it's stuttering a bit. Would this just be a problem whereby my CPU is not able to keep up?

From what I can see my CPU is nearly maxed but the GPU seems to be running fine. Around 70%-80% usage with temps of 62. Any ideas what I could do?

Just to note I'm running the settings on "High default" with no change in settings on a 1080p monitor.

I have also limited FPS to 60 for this game, but still experience the issue.

What's your vsync setting? Because it's dropping under 60 FPS it's re-syncing at 30 FPS. If you turn vsync off it will resolve it but I believe it's one of the settings that should prevent it happening.

I have FC3 but with vsync off so haven't tested the different settings.

Ok I'll give it a go without v-sync turned on thanks. I think at the moment it's currently set to 1. It's such an awesome game, but annoying when every 5 seconds or so it feels like it's having a mild heart attack :p

As I said, I'm not entirely sure what the different vsync settings do. You can try it with it on 2 as well to see if it's any different.

I've got a 120 Hz monitor and there is next to no tearing anyway even with vsync disabled and the game already feels quite sluggish without vysnc on so I leave it off. :)

I had it off originally but encountered some really bad stuttering in the game. I then turned vsync to 1 and limited the fps to 60 if I remember correctly...so I'm not sure which one solved the issue. But I'll play around with the vsync settings again and try it with each of the levels it offers

Try Setting PostFX medium and switch of MSAA that a real killer in this game. Set Vsync = 1 and GPU buffer = 1

Dont use vsync 2 unless you want to run with half FPS of the Hz of the Monitor so 60hz=30fps

Thanks I will give that a try. I have tried without vsync but that made no real difference. I'll try those settings you've suggested now shankly

It won't let me change the PostFX from High to Medium? It will only let me do this by changing the 'Overall quality'

Enable tripple buffering via CCC, fixes a lot of ****!!!

Also you can only change the graphics settings via CUSTOM keep moving along until custom is at the top.

Changed settings to high, with medium PostFX, vsync 1 and gpu buffering tried 1 through 3, still seem to be suffering drops in frames. Runs perfectly well at 60, then every 4 seconds drops to 30. No idea why

Try RadeonPro, set Dynamic Framerate Contrl to 60, force vsync on (in RP) and enable tripple buffering, then disable in game vsync.

Benefits of vsync (no tearing), but it will keep it as close to the target frame rate as possible, and not 1/2 it like vsync normally does when you go below 60.

I have AMD Vision engine control centre installed - can't find the option in there to enable the triple buffering. Can anyone give me a hint where it is hiding :p

Disable MSAA? On the graphic setting switch over till you get to custom and change the settings from there.

I found the option, hidden away at the bottom of a very long list :p It does say though, "OpenGL settings", so would this work for Far Cry 3 given that it's Direct X?
