Ive got a MSI HD 7950 Twin Frozr III OC V2 3072MB GDDR5 card and at stock the idle temperatures are around 50c and at load on furmark it can reach 80c even with the fan set to 60-80% any higher is insanely loud is this safe. What are the maximum safe load temperatures for this 7950 ?

How does the Gigabyte version of the 7950 stack up with the msi twin frozr in terms of how cool it runs is it any cooler than the msi one ?

It looks like a bad batch of 7950 Twin Frozrs. Did you pick one up from the shop over the weekend?

I picked up two and they are both doing the same, except mine are hotter. :(

Mine idle high 50s to low 60s and at load go over 90c with the fans sounding like they're about to take off.

Rusty0611 has had 2 that did the same too, he sent them back and got an HIS IceQ which is fine.

i ordered one of these from ocuk on friday when it was on offer,

Idles at 28c ish and didnt touch 60 while playing bf3 and i have overclocked it to 1000/1400 on stock volts using msi afterburner.

Fan was about 50% maybe not even quite that, ill double check that though tonight.

Yeah 50°C idle is well off what it should be.
Either take as chance and reseat or better still, RMA.

Edit: Then again, I can't see reseating dropping 15-20°C...

Is it worth switching this for the Gigabyte ATi Radeon HD 7950 Windforce 3X 3072MB GDDR5.Does the gigabyte version overclock just aswell as the msi twin frozr ?

I hope I have the same experience. Ordered mine on Friday also, delivered today. Gibbo did say it will be from their new batch, so fingers crossed....

I will report back tonight with my temps.

Sounds like the OP got one of the old batch or the new batch has the same issues also.

I wonder if OcUK will accept an RMA for those kind of temps as they are still acceptable temps but not what I would accept for a card like this with a specialist cooler on it....

Indeed. At the same clock settings and voltages the HIS IceQ was 15c cooler than the bettter MSI Twin Frozr III and 25-30c cooler than the worst one :(.

Bad batch again OcUK!

@tron: Return it and get another one or a different model. Also ask for your postage back.

The ones that aren't being returned are probably people running them at clock and don't mind a little noise. Even at stock they'll be pushing 70-75c though which is ridiculous. Sounds like they're all knackered.

Honestly I think it's bad they're still selling them.

I'm not sure its necessarily a bad batch, as there are stories on other websites/forums saying the same thing. Either MSI quality control is just bad, or they're cutting corners.

Either way, don't think I'll be buying MSI any time soon.

I have the same card and it idles at about 55C, under load in games it usually runs around 70C at 65% fans, but furmark pushes it up to 80C. That's at 1010/1350 clocks with a very small voltage bump. Ambient temps are supposed to be 20C according to my thermostat, but I don't trust it at all so take that with a pinch of salt.

Another dodgy one.

To give you some context, my HIS 7950 card runs at 1.15V and 1125 core clock and gets to 61-63c in game and Heaven looping. This is the temperature these cards SHOULD be at.

Hmm, I wonder this too. I would quite like to overclock my card higher, but temps are a limiting factor for me.

Oh dear sounds like mine is one of the bad ones as well.

Running mine at stock I get temps of 51-55 at idle and then gets up to 75 when playing WarZ or Sleeping Dogs.
Fan kicks in pretty hard at that level and can hear over my headphones which is a tad annoying !

Honestly guys you don't need to RMA them if you're under the 14 day purchase period. Just send them back under the 14 day satisfaction guarantee.

Technically you could RMA it because it says 17c cooler than reference and xDB quieter on the box... which is isn't. But a DSR return is just far easier.

50-55°C idle is NOT acceptable :)

Those cards should be at 25-35°C tops.
My Sapphire dual X cooler kept my card at about 30°C idle and 70°C when running Sleeping dogs at extreme settings with an 1150mhz/1.15v OC.
Your card should do the same or better imo.

Sounds like it's on constant voltage or something...

I'm not though, I've had mine since the 22nd of Oct. I just thought they ran that hot normally! :o

Post in Technical Support with the problem and you're welcome to quote my temperature and settings as a point of reference.

Worse that can happen is they say "no" but as they're probably more than aware that these 7950's aren't running as they should be my guess is they'll accept the RMA.

Good shout. If they do accept an RMA I'll be gutted about the downtime :/

80.c for a single card at stock is very high. 55.c idle is also a bit much. I run my XFX DD cards at 1200/1600 and the top card reaches a max of 75-80.c and that is heat soaked from the bottom card. My idle is around 30.c..

The MSI cooler should be doing better than that. Do MSI allow you to remove the cooler and re-apply the paste ?

Thats same time I got mine as well and exactly what I thought.

Even with fans blasting its quieter than my other PC so never really bothered me.
Will probably mean I will struggle to put a decent overclock on it though if I wanted in future
