7950 Just doesnt perform

...until nVidia comes out with its new nForce chipset for LGA775.

So when NVidia adds a mobo to their support list what does that mean? Because a lot of them dont have SLI support.

All i know is, it needs a PCI bridge.

I Read your write up, does it reallly need an SLI mobo? If it does, then upgrading to conroe will be a bit difficult, no mobos support SLI

No, it won't need a SLi mobo, but the BIOS has to be compatable (sp).

What would be a good idea is let some one else get a Conroe board and try the 7950 with it..

Have you thought about getting a cheap as chips mobo and new chip from either the MM (members market) or from OcUK themselves?

Agent.

I can get hold of a 3.6Ghz 661 Intel, i was planning on just getting the Gigabyte 965-DS4 and give that a bash and wait a few weeks on a conroe, i had the DS3 last week, and had to RMA it, it was stone dead. Ive just had dumb luck with mobo's this time around.

My AA8 Duramax that i picked up just the otherday doesnt support the 661 intel :) ha ha more dumb luck.

But i want to practise a bit of caution from here on out, or it hurts the wallet :D a lot :( thanks to ebay, recoop the damage :D

Only way to solve it is throw in one mean CPU and then see if it walks the walk.

I will think about my delimma over the weekend, but the DS4 looks the plan with the 3.6 for now.

looking at your 06 scores your are getting more than a single 7900gt but its deffo cpu limitation thats kicking in here. even if you replace that cpu with a 2mb cache p4 running at 3.6ghz you will seen good gains.

Found this on a forum see if it helps:
Install 91.37
Multi GPU should be auto detected
Leave the SLI Settings alone. (DONT TOUCH IT..DONT EVEN CLICK IT!!)
Turn Vsync off
Pick your Quality setting in Global (High Quality/Quality)

Now..run your games.

2447 SM2.0 Score
2916 HDR/SM3.0 Score
1030 CPU Score

This is quiet interesting and seems im not the only having problems solving low 3dmark scores with 7950 gx2. I have had mine in 2 different mother boards and simply cannot get above 4500 in 3dmark o6. I have Mailed Asus to see if they have a bios update in the pipeline to solve my issue and also xfx to see if they are aware of any incompatabilty issues. No answers from either. So here i am sat with a very expensive gfx card and no real speed increase to speak of.

What i did find that if i use the primary PCI-E slot i get 2000 3dmark06.
If i use the Secondary Slot i get 4500 in 3dmark06. very strange?

I have almost given up with this card and i am gonna be getting a Conroe in the not too distant future even though i have only just got this setup.

Hope you have more luck fixing this than i did. very annoying.

Locutus, know exactly where u comming from. You have even lower marks than me  say, what CPU score do you get in 06

Ive tried 2 motherboards.

I just tried OCing the card just now by 50mhz, so from 600 to 650mhz for the memory, DOOM3 didnt get 1fps faster, deffintly looks like a bottleneck to me.

Im going for the kill now, E6700 Conroe. HOPEFULLY the motherboard i choose is ok. If that doesnt cure it, i have the most expensive dual..ermm single gpu card in the world :D

Just installed 91.37 drivers and this is my 3dmark06 scores (best i have had)

sm2.0 score 1955

HDR/sm3.o score 1834

CPU score 1759

This is with only 1 of my memory sticks installed. 1 turned faulty just to add to this dismal configuration of technology. lol

So as for your cpu being the bottle neck sounds like its not the main problem, cause i got much higher cpu than you and I have and lower 3d performance. I think my PCI-E slot is not running at full speed. Your problem maybe a different 1. Id be interested to know if you solve your problem with out any major hardware change. Till then we both have to suffer.  :(

Good luck in your quest.

Yes, the cpu is the main problem in my case, the only score lower than yours was my CPU, but im getting around 5400 points in 3DMark 06.

I just ran fear, with FRAPS, and recorded the frame rate in a highly dense scene, once with Muilt GPU on, and once with it off.

Settings 1600x1200 AAx4 AFx4
Multi GPU: 47fps very smooth and responsive as i move
Multi GPU off: 21fps jittery and laggy as i move
:) plesent to notice

Quake 4 is the same, it is deffinitly faster with MULTI-GPU on, double the frame rate in the one scene
Settings 1600x1200 AAx8
Multi GPU: 25fps very smoother/a bit jittery
Multi GPU off: 13fps jittery

It seems when u play the actual games, i can notice some difference.
I really do think with a Conroe, this baby will open up.
