Decided to update the drivers on my second system yesterday and after uninstalling the previous drivers the 7950 is showing as standard vga adapter in device manager. I can't install the latest Catalyst drivers as they won't detect a Radeon gpu on the system. I've tried updating the drivers manually but Windows 7 just says that it's already selected the best drivers

Nothing on the system is picking it up as a 7950. I have tested the gpu in my main system and it works normally. Does anybody know a fix for this issue before I reinstall Windows?

Have you tried checking for AMD drivers via Windows Update? I don't think you need to uninstall the old drivers before installing new ones anyway.

It might be the integrated GPU. Try disabling it in BIOS. Also, try disabling it first in the Device Manager.

There isn't an integrated or onboard gpu.
Just done a fresh install on Windows and still it won't detect the 7950. Windows just install drivers for standard vga adapter...

Assuming the spec in your sig and assuming your 4970k is really a 4790k then there is an onboard GPU. If it's a different system then there may well not be of course!

Still it should pick up the 7950 regardless, especially after a reformat. Have you checked all the cables are properly seated etc?

Edit: Have you tried the previous set of drivers? No idea if they use the same detection mechanism - might help narrow it down a bit? :S

It's in a different system to the one in my sig. It's an i5 750 in a MSI p55 gd-65 motherboard so no gpu other than the 7950.
I've tried the gpu in the system in my sig, worked fine, I've tried the previous drivers that were installed, no truck.
Soon as Windows loads it just installs drivers for standard vga adapter straight away. If I try to update manually Windows says I already have the best drivers installed...
I'm stumped

how did you uninstall the drivers? Have you tried ddu just curious as when you uninstalled old drivers might of not completely uninstalled them and broke something until they are completely wiped out

Yeah did you use a driver sweeper as they were known to remove OS files (eg amd.inf) required to detect AMD cards at one bit.
Best thing you can do is perform a system restore to before you uninstalled the AMD drivers. DO NOT use any driver sweeper. Check your drivers are the ones previously installed then update them again over the top.

Thanks for the help guys. I used DDU but now i have done a fresh install of Windows 7 and it still doesn't pick it up  The card works fine in my main system below so i'm starting to think another piece of hardware is to blame

hmmm.......bios setting to check onboard first instead of pci-e? I know that sometimes will do exactly this...also bios up todate?
