7970 Lightning, worth the premium?

funny you should say that whilst trying to use ln2 rebooted and it came up with chkdisk on boot drive (ssd)

I received an integrity error during a full diagnostic scan

Secure erase and reinstall this time round.

Still no block pictures from EK :o

I hope they make enough of them, the majority of Lightning owners seem to want to put it under water :D

They'l be more than 50!

I'll dump the LN2 bios from my card for you tonight, should be at my pc in an hour or so.

Thanks, who knows whats happened only tried it the once, unless AB 2.2.2 is interfering somehow, and i dont want to do fresh install just yet. Might try it in my lads pc at weekend.

Why o why do you slide back to 0! karma for 24/7 benching.

The reactor is stupid, I hope there give us no option of keeping it attached.

Has anyone had any issues with the Lightning in regard to display port connection stability and reliability?

A few of us have, random displayport errors and black screens, unplugging the cable and putting it back in works for me, can be a pita though.

Vega, Did you manage to fix the resetting slider issue with unofficial OC on ?

The blocks look sweet, can't wait for the test results!

Well that's not good news, especially when I have four DP monitors plugged in lol.

Nope. Just installed my MSI Big Bang X-Power II motherboard with fresh Win 7 and 2.2.2 AB, still unofficial overclocking mode sliders are broken.

So it look's like in order to get above 1300 MHz core you will need an earlier version of AB, or different software altogether. I wish stuff like this was tested better.

I reckon the 12.7 official (hotfix) changed something permanently. I was happy with the unofficial ones!

I'm tired of waiting for these 2b models to arrive, been waiting a good month. Apparently now there's 1500 users on 120hz. Super tempted to just buy a standard catleap and try to get 67hz out of it until the PCBs arrive, then again it'l be the same case with those...

Having never experienced the pleasure of 120hz would you say I'd be missing out big time?

I'm sure I read something about certain revisions of CCC killing overclocking with these cards? Some fix or other was required to allow overclocking again. If it helps I'm on 12.4, no CAP's with AB 2.2.2.

And yes Crim, you are missing out on 120hz, everything just feels smoother than 60hz.

@Vega, have you had issues with the DP ports too then?

But the unofficial 12.7 ones worked fine. I'l google around for a fix

Ahhh yer I know I'll miss out!

I feel like I'm just going to end up buying one out of impulse tonight.

I'm playing BF3 and Crysis on a £50 monitor!

Depends what you want from a monitor though, if it was me and I was buying a monitor right now, I'd be putting my money into one of those 1440p 27" Monitors OcUK have for pre-order at £320. 1440p + 120hz does sound like a winner but you're going to need vega proportions of GPU grunt to get the best out of it, as with 120hz comes the hunger to cap out the vsync at 120fps.

@Crim, can you take a screen cap of the contents of program files/MSI Afterburner, want to check you're not missing a few files that let you OC the 7970 :)

Before I started my build I had my heart set on the Catleap and still do. It's cheap, its 27" and capable of 100hz+ Its perfect.

If two 7970s can get me 109fps in bf3 at 2560x1440(which it should) then I couldn't ask for more.

Yer I keep looking over what monitors OCUK have for sale. My plan C was to get a Hazro but what I've read of Hazro owners moving to catleaps is that they prefer the catleap yet the Hazro is still double the price...

What's your opinion on the Asus VG278H?

Sure

Missing some vital files in there to OC a 7970 buddy, Give me a half hour or so till I get on my main rig and I'll upload the files you need ;)

The Asus is the big brother to my VG236H, love the monitor, colours are vibrant, its smooth, looks good, my only gripe is no DP ports.

Well thats a relief! May be the same case for Vega too.

Thankyou :D

So what are you using if it has no DP, an adapter?

Also £500 *****? What justifies that! also not too stoked about 1920x1080 on a 27" screen

I certainly wouldn't spend £500 on one, my 23" cost me around £240.

Yeah I'm using the £74 Startech adaptor from OcUK.

iirc either AMD somehow killed overclocking via AB or MSI changed something in AB that required a few extra files to enable overclocking. I'm on the case just now, its probably the same problem Vega has, hopefully the files will help you both out :)

The catleap does look pretty good but two things would stop me buying one: 1. No DP & 2. No warranty.

£500 is a no go for me. My one and only gripe with the Samsung S27A750D is the base, I despise of it. O god year and it has no DL-DVI

I read that somewhere but I never followed up with it because all that changed with my driver setup was unofficial to official.

Well you already have the adapter the only thing setting you back is it not being native DL DVI-D so like Vega said only 109hz for AMD.
In terms of warranty, some suppliers give a year warranty and others allow you to extend it to 3 years through squaretrade for a price, but I believe that's only available in america
