been running a powercolor 7970 card with a ek full cover block for about a month now, stock speed is a lowly 925 / 1375, and it runs very well right up to 1100/1550, however i get occasional ramdom crashes and blue screens, even on a lower overclock and with +20% power

I have heard people mention upping the core voltage? is this different to the +20 in the CCC? i have used Afterburner to monitor the card, and it maxes out at 50 - 60 degrees even on the highest overclock settings

crashes seem to be in big games like Crysis 3 and Metro Last light, and sometimes in GTA4 with 100% people+ traffic

all games running at 1080p with almost max settings all round

4770K @ 4.1-4.3 turbo clock temps no higher than 65deg under water just on auto power settings, runs prime plus kombuster no problems

8GB Corsair Dominator GT 2133Mhz ram on XMP profile.

gpu generally at 100% yes
 
Its more likely to be CPU/RAM dodgy overclock or faulty hardware if you're getting BSOD's i would've thought.

However you can try afterburner to increase the core/memory voltage on your card a notch or two.
 
Have you checked Blue screen reader or WhoCrashed to see if it pinpoints anything?
Do you still get blue screens if running the card at stock settings?

Your PSU has plenty of power so can probably rule that out
 
got the card running at stock now so will be running it like that for a few days see how that fairs

didnt know about the crash reader things... will look at them see that they tell me

not running beta drivers, just latest

(running Windows 8 btw)
 
there is also quite a lot of coil whine type noise from the card itself in games pretty much all the time, but its done that at stock as well as overclock and doesnt seem to have any effect on stability

Just turn the speakers up :)
I have read that it dies down over time. Some say you should leave it on a game menu (when it's at it's worst) over night and it seems to fix it. Just the new compnenets 'burning in'.
It can also be linked to PSU. I've just got a new one and my coil whine has almost disappeared.

Whatever game, benchmark, game screen causes it to make the most coil whine on. Leave it on that for 12-24 hours. You might find it cures it or it dies down. Otherwise if its that bad you can rma it.
 
it seems to make the noise all the time its doing anything 3d... its an extremely quiet pc but thankfully the pc isnt close to my ears to notice it too much when i have games on

the card was bought from the MM with the block attached and no stock cooler so not much chance of RMA, tbh as long as its not the root of these problems i can live with it lol but i just wanted to add it to the info on the system
