I managed to kill my HIS 7970 shortly after completely voiding the warranty on it :D

Therefore I'm planning on buying a new card today to replace it, and just wanted some opinions.

I was thinking of either the MSI 7950 that's on offer today for £240, or the Sapphire 7970 that's going for £335.
Is the difference between these cards worth almost £100?

Any suggestions will be appreciated :)

How you kill it? The difference between the top end card and it's lower end sibling are rarely worth it to most people IMO

I installed a Gelid Icy Vision-A on it - I smelt burning on the first boot and now it lies dead on my desk :(
I'm not sure what I did wrong, everything seemed to be making good contact. Not much I can do about it now anyway.

There are some excellent 7950s on offer this week. The twin frozr at £240 looks a bargain to me.

I would try and rma the card, if there is no physical damage to the card, put the stock cooler back on and plead ignorance. What do you have to lose?

Yeah I'll give it a go - though I've been told if they deem my warranty as void I won't get my card back, as they're based in Taiwan.

get two 7850s and overclock them. You'd be able to hit 3k score on heaven and the best you can get with a 7970 is 1.8k stock, 2k oc.

There are plenty of 7970's at around 2.2k and above on heaven, and I seriously doubt you could get 3k with 7850 crossfire, but you are right 7850 crossfire would be faster.

Not many though, my 7970 does 1.8k on 1050 stock clock, think a 925 card would be way lower as well. Can get it to 2054 score but that's a kamikaze run, depends if you get a good clocking card or not.

Guess you just need to be lucky in getting good clocking cards. 7850s seem to be mostly good clockers. Plenty of 7850s do 1500 scores, xfire them and they go to 2700-3000 scores in heaven benchmark, lots of screens of that in both heaven and 7850 threads.

But I've also seen lots of screens of cards doing 1k so may end up with 2 duds. At least in the future with even a crap clocking 7970 you can buy anotehr cheap one and blow anything away even at stock.

I went for the MSI 7950 :) I should have gone for the 7950 the first time really, I probably won't even notice the difference in performance :P

Look, put the stock cooler on exactly how you found it, and RMA the card, what have you got to lose?, and I bet you will get a replacement or refund.
