Will this psu ALPINE 500W SILENT PSU 12CM FAN 6P 3XSATA power a 7970? or do you recommend a PSU upgrade.

Doesnt scream quality straight away get a good branded 750w and you'll be sorted

buy the best branded psu you can. Just because a cheapo unit claims to be a 500w supply in no way means you can compare it to a decent branded 500w unit, as above a cheap PSU may not just die itself - it may take a good part of your PC with it. First rule of PC building - don't cheap out on the PSU (second don't cheap out on RAM although given the price of DDR£ these days its not a problem to buy good branded RAM at a good price)
