380 for AMD, 950 960 for Nvidia.

+1 for the 380, though the Nvidia equivalent will be the 960 - and that's still a fair degree slower in a number of titles, too.

That's because they're revisions. 7970 -> 280X -> 380X.

Both 7970 and 380X have 2048/128/32 core config. The 380X is clocked a little higher (970 v 925 MHz) but has lower memory bandwidth (182 vs 264 GB/s) because of the narrower bus (256 vs 384 bit). But the newer card is GCN 1.2 (more efficient use of memory bandiwdth) and has an extra GB of memory.
 
I wouldn't even bother getting any current 7970 replacement. Try getting higher card like an R9 290/390 or get a used 7970 since that is still a fair bit faster than a gtx 960 or 380, especially when overclocked. The 380X is the only equivalent but why pay nearly £200 when you can get a decent used 290X/390 for that kind of cash.
