7990 Inquiry.

Just monitoring the temps on my 7990 and can't understand why GPU2 is showing 99% usage when I'm just on the desktop, nothing else.

Gpu1 44 degrees 0% usage fan speed 45% 2658rpm

Gpu2 56 degrees 99% usage fan speed 61% 3500rpm.

Any idea what is going on.

It is all built outside the case.

Asus P9X79 Pro 3930k 16GB Samsung Green Leadex 1000W Platinum.........

I would also like to know as to why it uses both gpu's when all i am doing is surf???

Mines has a block on it and no fans, the fans had to go they gave me a headache there too noisy under load.

Could you post your Afterburner settings if that's what you're using?

have you disabled ULPS mine never worked and had a similar effect.

Turn off hardware acceleration in Chrome/IE/Firefox. It seems to make the GPU work full speed for some users.

Are you using GPU-Z?

My 7990 when idle shows 0% usage on both cores.

These are the only settings, not bothered OC'ing with these sort of temps.

Hmm... Normally I'd say to disable ULPS and enable unified monitoring, but I'm not sure on this one.

Have you checked for any mining viruses and disabled hardware acceleration?
Might even be something you can solve by reinstalling drivers.

I have never mined with it. I bought it off Gibbo a few weeks ago and spent half an hour cleaning all the fluff out of the radiator. I might drop him a note and see what temps and such he was running at.
Can I take the fan cowling off to clean the rad? Reason I ask is because I have ever messed about the Gpu before, normally just plug and play.
I'll look at disabling hardware acceleration.

You don't need to have mined to get a mining virus afaik. Anyway, I don't think it's the problem, just something else to exclude.

Technically, you can take the cowl off to access the bare heatsink, but it's a bit of a pain and you'd have take off the entire cooler to do it.

So tried disabling ULPS and that seems to have done the trick. What effect if any, will this have?

Gpu 1 @ 38C Gpu 2@ 56C at 20% fan speed and 0% usage idling. So a lot better, but what temps should I be looking at?

I would think both cores should be about the same temps at idle.

Yeah, they should be roughly the same.
Do you have more than one screen plugged in?

With just AB open, does it still show 100% usage?

AFAIK GPU-z used to have a bug where it would ramp up gpu2 usage when opened, AB also showed the usage going to 100%, but when GPU-z was closed, it would drop back down in AB.

Just the one monitor 144Hz.

Have lowered the fan profile on AB Gpu 1 @45C and Gpu 2 @38C, running constant now for the last half hour.

I have the same card, and as mentioned earlier in this tread you have to disable ULPS.

Do it through AB settings, and reboot...all is good!
