7k car advice

likely no use to you, but i recently picked up a 63 plate 2008 for over a grand more than your budget which is the highest spec feline model(before the newer 2008 version), 1.6 petrol, 135 for year tax, insurance is fair(i have points) and 422 miles to a tank so far, has 44k miles, but been great for my 40 mile round trips to work, been very good for my 300 mile round trips to devon, its really nice to drive and its an improvement over the 208 its crossover from, so id say get the 208 as it be more suited to you and should be cheap enough, that is if you dont mind the french cars.

Exactly my thought. Electric cars, while great aren’t really suitable for a country where space is a premium and houses get built on postage stamps.
At the moment you're right. When the range is up to similar distances to petrol and every fuel station, supermarket, shopping centre, car park, street lamp has charge points - electric will be mainstream.

So working out my mpg, I can do 320 miles on a tank of fuel.

The commute consists of 10miles motorway, 4miles of stop start traffic and 2 miles of dual carriageway.

By my calcs my car is doing 38mpg which I don’t think is very good.

From suggestions here it seems a fiesta 1.0ecosport (zetec s for styling) would fit the bill quite nicely and at 123hp should be a bit more fun to drive but still offering a good mpg.

Focus is similar but my thoughts are the same engine in a smaller car would be more fun?

School run is only a very short journey so 3dr is fine.

Will look at 208’s although I’ve never been a fan of French cars.

for the type of car mine is and having 17" alloys aswell, from this bmw helped 1.6 i have been getting 37-44mpg, mostly 40 onwards, however while i suggested the 208(even 308 be good), whether your a fan of french cars or not, if you wanting to have a fun drive in the sense of engine performance then id probably not get the 1.6 vti, im happy with mine, but typical of 16v it has that okay low end with the much better top end, granted i havnt been racing through the gears, but it pulls great from 40mph in 5th, for fun you would what the 160-180hp turbo version.

fyi not all cars live up to the quoted mpg, but the eco should easily keep over 45mpg, depends how they behave and if you like to put your foot down.
