200BHP, sensible on fuel (28+mpg around town would be ideal), cheapish parts, quite reliable... Ideally 2008 or newer. Milage 50k tops.

Where would your money go?

Obvious choice ignoring mpg's would be a Focus ST... but I do too many miles to justify 22mpg or so around town.

Had an EP3 Type R, Golf 1.8 20vt remapped etc. Got a Fiesta ST at the moment. All cars I've owned have been modded. This time I do not want to mess with exhausts, lowering, so looking for something good out of the box, powerful/quick, ok on fuel, ok on running costs/repair costs, ok reliability. Obviously nothing is gonna be brill at everything.

Corsa VXR's keep coming to the forefront, I aren't bothered about the stigma if it ticks the boxes.

Also had a think about Megane 225's, but are they typically french? I know nothing about them. Not sure about their back ends.

Could save my cash and buy a mint low mile EP3 but maybe having been there done that there's no point doing it again. I know how much Honda parts cost and people talking about how bad the ride is in an FN2 is a little offputting. Was hoping for something with quite a refined smooth ride. I'm on coilovers on my Fiesta ST and my Civic was quite low and messed with, I'm just done with all that kinda nonsense now.

Could indeed keep my ST, but although quite a good torquey engine around town and quite frugal with it, it's a little boring as there is no pizazz or event as you climb up the revs.

Let the ideas flow :)

I have a focus St and it is an awesome car. Over the past 2 and a half years it's been my daily driver and I've loved every minute of it. With a remap it truly is a beast, it handles awesome and if you ever have any issues it's not normally expensive to repair. In the time I've owned it I have only ever had to replace the usual bits such as brakes, battery, tyres etc..

Saying that my friend had a corsa vxr and it was a really good car. It felt very light and you could throw it round corners with ease. The only problem for me was the seats, the material was thin and I'd often get back/bottom ache. He averaged around 30mpg where as my st sits around 22mpg but I do have a heavy foot!

Clio 200? about the same economy as your ST but faster and more fun to drive, just don't get the cup if you drive it daily.

Go older and get a DC5, you might scrape a 2004+ facelift for that money which has better suspension etc and just keep it standard.

The difference in MPG is so marginal you shouldn't make a big deal out of it. No car with 200bhp is going to get 28+mpg "around town".

Anyway, this is my "thirsty" ST...

I'd be tempted by a R26 F1 Megane, good power, awesome seats, and an LSD. Was very tempted to get one of these after my CTR after having a shot of my mates. The dash and steering wheel aren't the nicest things though.

HAhaha, seriously? 28mpg around town? I got 25mpg from a 2 litre Mondeo and only really get low to mid 30's in things like 320d's and 120d's!

Any sort of half decent petrol car is going to do 20-24ish around town, not 28, unless you have some sort of bizarre definition of around town that means sitting on the ringroad with the cruise set to 56 or something.

I own an FN2 and the ride isn't anywhere near as bad at people make out. I'm running the 19" Rage wheels as well, so on the standard 18" it'd be even more compliant. Seriously see if you can get a test drive of one from a garage and see what you think, I think you'll be pleasently surprised :)

Astra VXR.

I averaged 31MPG and could do 40MPG on long trips. Woeful handling but still bucket of fun. Don't look gay like a Corsa.

Won't find a decent 2008 though for the price. Maybe 55-56 will pop up.

Being OcUK I know this is already off the cards :p

Maybe a little "out there" but can you get a Mazda 3 MPS for that sort of money?

I quite like the megane though.

Go for something a little different, if you don't like it then at least you've given it a go!

LOL I do... With 356Bhp almost 2 Tonne Lexus Hybrid ;)

:D

Although not relevant to OP... Have you though about something a bit bigger like a Mondeo ST TDCI? May not handle as well as the smaller cars but more comfy and should return silly mpg in comparison. ;)

Yeah ross quoting your ST figures isnt too indicative of the actually MPG as you get unusually high MPG for a focus ST!

true dat! :p

To be fair, i just drive normally. I don't drive like I've stolen it, but at the same time, I don't hold people up...

Here is a running poll on Focustoc.com

Those getting under 20 clearly drive like *****. 25 should be more than easy on an average tank, and even if you have a spirited drive here and there aswell.

24mpg is the lowest I've ever seen, and that was on a run up to Alston Bypass. Following a mate in an Imprezza and another mate in a Clio Trophy.

35mpg is the highest I've ever seen, and it was pretty hard to achieve that as well.

Honda are only getting rid because of EU regulations...

There is always a time an a place for a high revving petrol engine.
