7xxx series, how many of you suffer this problem?

Hi, I received my 7850 yesterday (to replace my ageing 260gtx), all seemed well at first. Played Fallout New Vegas with everything on max settings for 30mins or so with it not going below 60 fps (vsync on).

Then I was just browsing the forums and my screen went black with feint grey lines down it... nothing responded. I reset the machine and checked the card was seated correctly along with the DVI cable and hoped it was a one off. It's done it a few times now though, even when just browing the internet. It did it once after a restart with 30 secs or so.

Temps are absolutely fine.

These 'crashes' only occur when using 2d clocks, such as being on the desktop or browsing the internet. It doesn't crash at all when gaming (using the 3d clocks). People say that it's the newer drivers the cause the problem, I have rolled back to 12.4 drivers and haven't had any problems so far. You can apparantly use the newer drivers and 'fix' the problem by increasing the 2d clocks to nearer the 3d clocks but of course I don't want to try this if I don't have to.

My concern is, it seems to be an issue with 7800 series of cards. ATI haven't acknowledged the problem (to my knowledge) and i'm left wondering if they are going to release a newer driver that is going to address this problem. I don't like the thought of being left with a card that I have to use old drivers for to prevent desktop crashes.

I have read numerous forum posts with people with the same issue including here on ocuk.

So my questions are to the people that have this problem:

1) Do you use 12.4 and older drivers and don't worry about not being able to use the newer drivers.

2) Do you use the newer drivers and just up the 2d clocks to 'fix' the problem and accept it's something you have to do?

I'm still on 12.3 on my 7950. While it doesn't give me better performance compared to the other ones, it's the most stable with no crashes at all. The later ones I get different problems with each driver set.

12.4 I get crashes when waking the PC from sleep.

12.5 beta was fine but with some crashes in a few games.

12.6 was a little better but still with some crashes and a few odd graphical glitches.

I've not tried the 12.7 betas yet, but I'm going to wait until AMD finally produces a good set of drivers.

i had a grey screen of death yesterday which apears to be known as the browsing screen of death. googling suggests if you disable hardware acceleration in your browser it shouldnt happen, maybe you could try disabling aero aswell if it happens when your on your desktop

im using the 12.7 betas, i also got my card yesterday btw

Likely a bad card. shouldnt do that.
try downclock memory.

sometiems flash bugs for example firefox out.
I try a beta version of a browser and see if that works first.

I had a similar problem with my 5850.

Probably no help to you at all but what solved it for me was having my PC 'face down' rather than on its side.

(I know this suggests that my card was badly seated but it seemed solid enough).

I will post in my driver topic how did tests go.
With 12.7 + any caps i get Chrome/flash crash. Any 3d games and benchmarks are fine tho.

I get grey/blue/white with horizontal stripes screens of death, random flickering, artifacting, sleep mode crashes.
All the drivers so far have no effect so it's probably a hardware fault and the only fix is to wait for the 8xxx series.

Edit: Just crashed with solid grey screen. Keyboard locked up. Reset button unreponsive.

I have a Sapphire 7950 OC. I've had the BSOD and screen corruption/flickering/driver not responding errors since Day One but only when browsing and/or immediately after browsing e.g. Just sitting on the desktop.
Originally I had the 12.4 drivers installed. I now have 12.6 installed but still get the problems. (And yes, I uninstall the drivers each time and use Driver Sweeper to ensure complete removal.)

I have tried Internet Explorer and Chrome. It makes no difference.
I have disabled Flash hardware acceleration. It makes no difference.
I have created presets in the Catalyst Control Centre and varied the clocks/voltage.
The only settings that seem to work are the default settings for the card. i.e. Set the idle values to the stock clock speeds and stock voltage which sort of defeats the purpose of having idle settings.

But... if I boot up and play a game (Skyrim, Rift, Diablo 3) I can be in there for hours with not even a hint of a problem.

I bought the 7950 to replace my Sapphire 6950 which I ran for 18 months without any of these problems.

Gonna try the 12.8 drivers but I'm not getting my hopes up.

I don't know how you guys get so many issues.

Is anyone here with issues using unofficial overclocking method via afterburner/trixx by any chance?
