Hi, I received my 7850 yesterday (to replace my ageing 260gtx), all seemed well at first. Played Fallout New Vegas with everything on max settings for 30mins or so with it not going below 60 fps (vsync on).
Then I was just browsing the forums and my screen went black with feint grey lines down it... nothing responded. I reset the machine and checked the card was seated correctly along with the DVI cable and hoped it was a one off. It's done it a few times now though, even when just browing the internet. It did it once after a restart with 30 secs or so.
Temps are absolutely fine.
These 'crashes' only occur when using 2d clocks, such as being on the desktop or browsing the internet. It doesn't crash at all when gaming (using the 3d clocks). People say that it's the newer drivers the cause the problem, I have rolled back to 12.4 drivers and haven't had any problems so far. You can apparantly use the newer drivers and 'fix' the problem by increasing the 2d clocks to nearer the 3d clocks but of course I don't want to try this if I don't have to.
My concern is, it seems to be an issue with 7800 series of cards. ATI haven't acknowledged the problem (to my knowledge) and i'm left wondering if they are going to release a newer driver that is going to address this problem. I don't like the thought of being left with a card that I have to use old drivers for to prevent desktop crashes.
I have read numerous forum posts with people with the same issue including here on ocuk.
So my questions are to the people that have this problem:
1) Do you use 12.4 and older drivers and don't worry about not being able to use the newer drivers.
2) Do you use the newer drivers and just up the 2d clocks to 'fix' the problem and accept it's something you have to do?
