Download and install instructions

Firstly, install 7zip 4.65 from here
^reinstall 7zip if you've used my old reg entry pack..

64bit users

Navigate to the 'black' or 'normal' folder, save the dll to your X:\Program Files\7-zip directory, replacing the current file that sits in there -close 7zip before doing this if it is open.

Open 7zip, click Tools, Options, select all, click ok. (untick any filetypes that you don't want 7zip to be the default app for)

Restart PC for icons to be rebuilt.

info..

After waiting a few years for a 64bit free resource editor, W3bbo from msfn has made one, it's still in beta, but fully functional for the basic use I need from it.

Big thanks to W3bbo, without him, this wouldn't be possible.

Here is what they look like, I use the black ones in Vista and the normal ones in XP.

Each icon has a 48x , 32x and 16x icon, for different folder views

These are the filetypes that I've changed them for.

If anyone wants other icons changed too, let me know. I've never seen any of the others in use tbh

I'll have a look now to try and find the default Vista folder icon, so I can make a third set for that too.

When official 7zip updates are released, I'll update the dlls, and the file version number that sits in the same dir. So you can quickly tell if I've released a new version.

So this new update is the installer yes?

Looks good and I'll download and install it. Makes it look nicer than the default 7z icons. I'm guessing I could do something similar myself to get Vista to use another version of the ImgBurn icon? At the moment Vista is displaying the ImgBurn disc icon on top of a sheet of paper. I just want the disc on its own as the icon but I've not worked out how to control this with Vista. Any hints? :p

there is no installer now, it's just the dll that you download directly from my site.

more work involved for me, as I have to release 4 dlls each time a new 7zip comes out.

until there's a 32/64bit commandline app, i'll have to do the dirty work for you guys :)

marc, go on msn, i'll tell you how to sort that out..

basically you use reshacker to extract the icon, then 'easy icon maker' trial to edit the icon, and reshacker to re-import it into the imgburn exe.

Hi bledd. Just moved the 7z.dll I downloaded from the x64 section of your site into the 7Zip folder and restarted. No changes. Realised I hadn't done the file types step in 7Zip so I did that and restarted again. Still nothing. :(

You will still need to do the "Open 7zip, click Tools, Options, select all, click ok. (untick any filetypes that you don't want 7zip to be the default app for)" part I guess though :).

Just tried it and it didn't work for me, using either the manual method or Pho's method :(

Using x64 and black icons.

Yeah done that. :)

Balls, mightn't work for me then. Have you got a 7-zip.dll file in your 7-Zip folder AS WELL AS a 7z.dll?

7-zip.dll is about 102Kb and 7z.dll (what we're replacing I think) is about 1.07Mb for me. Do you get that on your PC?

Yup, i have both those files. I didn't see how big the original file was though before i replaced it with bledd's version.

install 7zip
copy my dll to the folder
tools, options, tick file types, (i do all), click apply

restart pc

maybe run 7zip file manager as admin when doing it..

Doing it? The selecting all file types step?

Managed to get it working here. After copying the dll over, open 7zip as admin, like bledd said, and apply the file association. I didn't have to restart for mine to work though.

for those saying it doesn't work.

what icons do you have after applying my dll, setting the default file types as admin..?

if it's the normal 7z icons, then you just need to rebuild icon cache -reboot usually..

Just done the admin open on 7-Zip and restarted. Still nothing. This time however when I re-check 7-Zip all the filetypes are already checked, which wasn't the case before.

I still have the default 7-Zip icons. Done the admin open of 7-Zip as above and restarted. Nothing. Deleted the icon cache file and no change still. It was 5.07Mb, now it is 5.03Mb so something has changed in the file but no icons changed for me. :(

worked without a hitch on xp32/64 vista32/64 7/64 here

sure you don't have 32 and 64bit installed or something like that?
