8 core build? Can I improve?

With regards to that graphics card, it is just to give him SOME more gaming power. He doesn't really game apart from footy manager and the odd sim game. I figured this would give him SOME options without splashing out on a gpu when he isn't really a gamer per se.

I went with that case as it has plenty of fans and he will be putting the case in a fairly enclosed space so needs fans already in the case.

No OS needed.

The motherboard here is a much better choice. As is some quicker ram.

Not sure of your usage, but the R7 250 is not really a gaming choice, need an R9 270 really for gaming.

Also motherboard sound could be enough for your/his needs.

andy.

also...much better psu and you dont need 600w also better cpu cooler :)

I'd definitely suggest a better cpu cooler. Had the nero 3 on my 4670k and was slightly disappointed. If over clocking the piledriver, you definitely need a decent cpu cooler! Should be able to make 4.4 with a decent air cooler though

looking to get it to 4.4 for him. He doesn't really game....a bit of footy manager and some sim games but nothing what we would consider "gaming" I want him to have something better than onboard graphics but not spend a whack on it as it'll not really be gaming.

Will be used for streaming, internet, music mixing and some editing. Budget was total £750 so I thought I had got a decent setup

The extra couple of quid for the Raijintek one linked above would be worth it i think. Not had one myself but have heard decent things

You have a decent setup, really my only concern was the asrock board as it is not renowned for overclocking. The Asus 970 Evo R2.0 is good for the sort of OC you are thinking of and I would recommend it as a budget board. If you are only doing multiplier overclocking on the CPU, the ram you have chosen will be fine.
andy.

I'm only going to be using multiplier for overclocking and I'll not be touching the RAM. Basically the more I can save the better so 2400 RAM is just extra cost. The 1600 stuff would be fine for his use.

btw I went for the corsair as it was modular. Had that PSU for anothe rbuild and the amount of wires was mental. I might just put the corsair back...unless it's not a good idea with the cpu overclock drawing more volts?

Even overclocked you shouldn't be drawing anywhere near 600W I don't think (correct me if I'm wrong people), should be more like 300W at the wall all in? Card is only 65W and oc'd 83xx series at the extreme end can reach 250W.

I've got a Corsair AX series which I'm v. pleased with, though super flower seem to be the overclocker's favourite on here

If none of the programs he uses for music and editing uses the 8 cores, you are paying for a capable CPU which wont ever be under full load.

What software?

I would say to stick with the 550w golden green in case he wants to upgrade his card in the future.

Thanks Lee but yes he needs the sound card. He tinkers a fair bit with music so would be better to have one. He doesn't game that much so a 270 gpu isn't worth the outlay.
