With the variety and scepticism (latter especially on PC) of games available now, an initial outlay of £80 would be too high for most. It makes more sense to release a good foundation or initial game for £35-50 at most, then earn ongoing revenue from DLCs and expansions. The latter provides a good synergy for continued income. A larger initial price tag means more barrier to entry and often heightened expectations which can kill a potentially good game before it gets off the ground for longevity via (quality) DLCs and expansions.
