thanks for the replies.

It seems that the Intel/NVidia route are going to push above budget if you include the monitor. think he might have to push the budget up to £900 to get what he wants!

Has he considered buying some parts second hand? You can get a second hand R9 290X for under £200 and it is a very good card. It will max out 99% of games at 1080p.

how much of a performance difference is there between the 760 and the 970?

According to these performance test results, the GTX 970 is around 50% more FPS compared to the GTX 760.

thanks all for the replies, its taken me a while for my friend to work with me on this. Unfortunately I have tried to get him to go AMD, but he wants Nvidia so have chosen a 760 for him. Kept the CPU strong as it should last a few years given what people have been saying and allows upgrades for the GPU later.

I've come up with this for him, and wondered if anyone can maybe improve on it? Savings on the RAM for example, different GPU, maybe a better monitor for the price? it will be used for gaming mainly.

thanks again for the help!

That is a £5 cheaper SSD and its performance numbers suggests its quicker.

This RAM is obviously cheaper and will be compatible with a wider range of coolers.

You could save £14 by going for this OEM CPU

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-542-IN

and then adding something like the Raijintek Aidos cooler so you get a bit of overclocking headroom (bear in mind the OEM CPU doesn't come with a stock cooler and only 1 years warranty, but CPUs rarely fail if looked after correctly, they are usually dead on arrival)

That's your choice though whether it's worth the £14 tradeoff for the 2 years warranty loss :)

The prices on 760s are terrible just now. If he can wait for the 960 to come out in one or two weeks, it might be worth it. They will be better, and should also push the 760 prices down a bit, so he'll have a better choice on how to spend his money. He may regret getting a 760 as soon as the 960s are out, depending on their price.

It doesn't make sense right this minute to buy anything mid-range Nvidia, new. Hold out.

Thanks again for the responses!

Danny75 good point about the 960.... would this be a better card than the 760 given its supposed limitations of hardware...?

Shivy - good suggestion especially as there wouldn't be any point getting a K chip with no OC going on :D

Stulid - what case can you suggest? The one in my list was just cheap, looked good and well was cheap! I've got a Corsair Carbide 200r which is great but a bit more expensive... probably wouldn't want to go much more than that.

so after soaking up the suggestions I've got to this :) I went for the Themis cooler as I've got my i5 running at 4.4 no problems at all with it on so thought the extra £5 would be well spent :D I'll get him some fans as a present lol

I was just going by the one on OC by the user, didn't look much further than that. More than happy to take your advice however as my build is based on it, poached from another post :)
