Hi,

Looking to get a new Gaming PC for around the £800 mark.

Don't need to squeeze keyboard and mouse into that budget, but could probably do with a variable refresh monitor.

Not too sure on games selection, maybe Diablo 4/Wolcen when released.

TIA for any suggestions.

I was wondering if its worth using the 2600 instead of 3600 in order to get a 580 instead.
No, very little performance gain - better to get the 3600 as a foundation platform for your games and then upgrade the GPU in a years time - sell on.

EDIT: That case is Micro-ATX - it won't take full ATX boards - plus advise you get the MAX board no matter which CPU you decide on as upgrade path will be easier (and is better than that Gigabyte).

£139 for an RX570 is far too much given they have been £99 for a 4GB version, 40% more cost for 4GB RAM, which will not net you 40% gains in anything. I'd be tempted to buy a cheaper RX570, and use the saved £30 to buy the MSI Optix MAG241C Monitor which is 144Hz IPS.

Yeah, agreed, i do like IPS - but isn't that VA?

@Roverno - basically the MAX with 3600 is a solid foundation - and a RX 570 will tide you over @ 1080p (TN/VA/IPS) ideally 144Hz, and you can then build on that as your games progress with added GPU performance.

It is, I'm holiday lagged, still not really back to normal yet. :(

I was getting mixed up with the Acer Nitro VG271P which is 27" and IPS, and to be fair is probably still worth getting, even at the ~£230 price.

yeah sowwii, i boards ze short bus sometimes ;)
It's not a bus it's a park bench - but the lady you sit next to most days is grateful for the money you give her for your imaginary journey. :D

*I almost buckled today - had to take a sick day - back to work, whatever, tomorrow otherwise i may take receipt of an expensive fan - i had the ULTRA in my basket - why?..

Fair enough, I'll stick with a 3600. Makes sense to go with the latest platform really. Thanks

I feel there is hardly any reason to go for a 3600 when you will be using it with an entry level graphics card for 1080p gaming. The 570 will have below 60fps in most new games at ultra settings. Getting a 144Hz monitor is also an overkill as the 570 will never manage that.

Its better to go for a R5 2600 as that is only 10-15% slower but plenty for most games, significantly cheaper and pair it with a decent card like the Rx580 or 590. That would be way better balanced system. Also just get a 60Hz monitor as these cards are not good enuf for 144Hz gaming. Though you can buy one if you want to future proof.

If you want to upgrade in a years time, sell the processor and graphics card and change to what you like.

So why not a cheaper board like the MSI B450m Mortar? is the MAX significantly better?
The Tomahawk MAX has the advantage of being ZEN-2 compatible out of the box - it has had a larger eeprom and had a minor facelift to accomplish this but it could potentially save a lot of headaches if you run into problems using re-flash (an option on the Mortar - which allows you to flash the board to ZEN-2 compatibility without the need of a CPU).

*The MORTAR has had the same MAX treatment - and will be released late August according to MSI.

If you have £800, personally, I would go via the 3600 route - as saving ~£40 isn't going to improve your GPU choices any, plus the 3600 will last you a good while until an upgrade is required (i would recommend 2600X if going this route/gaming). But you must do what budget dictates, ultimately and the 2000 series are still very capable.

As mentioned you'll have a solid foundation to build on and easily fits into your budget if savvy with your build budget - and at £184 the 3600 is great bang for buck. As for monitor your choice - and remember the members market for GPU - some great deals to be had. (same could be said for CPU/motherboard etc too BTW - look out for 2600X/2700X - people are unloading)

EDIT: Mortar release date update - late August.

Is there any difference between MAG241C and MAG241CR

One has an R on the end... but other than that they seem the same?
