for a friend im helping out a build with
upgrading from a dell xps laptop as the gpu is to slow for his liking (gamer)
has to have a window case and squeeze as much into the budget as poss (this is hardware only)
cheers guys

Does he need: OP, moniter, keyboard etc. and does he have any sata drives he can use?

nope, just the tower itself
as for hard drive, he has all his steam games externaly, so aroun a 320gb would suffice i think
maybe 500gb to be safe (i know prices are crazy atm)

Well for the prices at the minute, the cheapest 500gb is £89.99, but there is an offer on for a 1tb hdd for the same price. I've just ordered a pretty nice setup to collect on tuesday for £700 :) There is another offer on at the minute which is 8gb of RAM kingston hyperx genesis :)

With the ocukxmas discount code, it's £808.36

The HDD and RAM are on offer, so make it snappy!

Drop the PSU to around 600W if he doesn't plan on SLI. Case depends on preference, but this one has a window and some nice cable management.

Just a start.

not going your usual bay route for 2nd hand items ;)

but seriously if you're buying by 11.59pm tomorrow from ocuk you get 5% off the whole order plus free shipping(useful if you friend is ordering and isn't a member on these forums).

ocuk currently have the seagate baracuda 1tb for £90, the cheapest hdd they have is 250gb samsung f3 @£78 and the 500gb hdd are £90+.

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18355464

if he prefers ati/amd then http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-042-HS&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1752

psu and motherboard will allow for sli/xfire in future.

or could buy the rest of the bits now and wait for the new graphics cards to be released in the next couple of weeks, so use the onboard vga for normal pc usage till he gets a graphics card.

great suggestions guys, going to give a quick shot of an i7 build considering his laptops already an i7 (1st gen)

crap psu, better to go with the gelid tranquilo cooler. the i2700k is only £10 more

ivybridge are due in march/april so go with the i2500k for now and then a year or so down the line upgrade to an ivybridge

This. Go for an i5-2500K and put the savings towards a better GPU. Afterall the reason why he's selling his laptop is for gaming potential, going i7 won't improve that but putting money towards a better graphics card will! Also, don't bother with the Coolermaster GX series PSU's their not very good.

this isnt my build, coolermaster power supply's are not crap id say (i own a 650watt that's the older model and it runs sweet as a whistle)
i like the asus, looks "pretty fly" has good reviews and fits 1155, is the geild much better?

well ill speak to him about it
are coolermaster power supply's really that bad?
Edit: he's not selling his lapop
Edit: just though i7 mobile cpu's have less performance and his is probably lower end (was an £900 laptop) so the i5 2500k looks like a winner in comparison to his laptop's cpu

+ he saw my old rig and was amazed at my performance in mafia 2 maxxed, and that was when i had my trusty xfx 4650 1gb so he's not after a complete beast of a gpu (or at least doesn't know what to expect)
and he wants this system to last him a good couple of years so there's no half way down the line upgrades (unless he speeks to me nicely :D )

from what I've read the gx series that comes in the bundle isn't the best, I have an old cm real power series 850w psu which had decent reviews at the time.

the cm silent pro psu are meant to be better than the gx psu.

Nice detailed review of the GX PSU here.

thanks for the information, seems it went out before they started torture testing
and looks like the same build quality as my friends 600w £2.50 car boot psu that went out on a gtx 280 (actually respectable for £2.50)
will stay away from that psu
seems its made of swis cheese :D
