20x1000GB seagate 7200.11 drives in raid6 on an areca ARC-1280ML Controller.

Just thought id mention it.

it is 20 drives in raid so it will be fast, a single drive can do over 100mbps, also if you look on google for this drive, this is about normal performance for that card

No point, if you consider that 4 SSDs can match the performance. Maybe they tested the card/show off.

no they couldn't 4x the £500 intels could easily do that speed but capacity vs cost, you would need 30 ssd's to cover EACH 1tb seagate drive, and they'd still run at 800mb's because thats what the controller card is limited to not what the drives are limited to. A samsung mlc drive cheaper with more capacity also doesn't do 250mb's reads so you'd need 6/7 just for the read speed, and still you'd have the capacity cost issue.

Likewise you wouldn't need 20 seagates to actually obtain that speed, from max speed you'd only need the 8 drives, to stay at 800mb's even at the drives minimum speed, 2-3 extra would do at most.

Now, what they need next is a board with two huge pci-e slots, 2 raid controller cards, run 10 drives on each card, and have someone make some software to raid together the two cards, so you can write at 1600mb/s sustained, that I'd like to see. you'd have a beast of a video editing machine there.
