Or whatever the number is..

Who has actually broken down and had their car repaired there and then by the RAC, AA, Greenflag or whomever?

I've called them out three times;

1> Head gasket popped, no chance - on the truck.
2> Head gasket popped, no chance - on the truck.
3> Alternator belt shredded, car driven to battery flat. On the truck.

Called them out when in a friends car;

1> Exhaust snapped, on the truck.

I know he's called them out twice as well.

1> Oil line split, on the truck.
2> Piston destroyed, rod through block etc, on the truck.

I don't know anyone who's had their car 'sorted' and on the way by the side of the road.

Only been driving 6 months but had to call out the RAC 3 months back when my battery went flat because my alternator belt had snapped off, 1 hour 30 mins after calling them up a guy comes and within 20 minutes he'd put on a new alternator belt and recharged the battery and only charged me £6.50, fine ever since.

Called once. Weren't able to fix at all.

Dead battery with deadlocks on guy didn't understand why the key wouldn't work in the locks. Then he wanted me to sign a bit of paper saying he would try hooking bonnet latch going through/over/between window and if the window (~£35 2nd hand) and it breaks its my problem. So sent him away and went through the grill (£7 to replace if needed) which he refused to do and did it myself.

over the last 15 years i have had a mixture of results.

1) Gearbox broken and locked keys in the car in a fit of rage - unlocked and then towed.

2) Lights failed - Temp fix by crossing over main beam and dipped wires in fuse box.

3) 2 flats on the m6 after hitting something (fitted spare and put one new tyre on on hard shoulder)

4) Belt failure at 3am on north circular - Fitted new belt and I was away.

5) Head failure - Towed

6) Drive shaft/CV joint failure and resulting damage - Truck

7) Puncture on M1 - Remove a wheel that had been airgunned on so tight i couldnt get the bolts off.

8) Flat battery after car had been left for 7 months. - jump started but then he tried to sell me a new battery.

Fix more than Towed but most of those were on OLD cars where you could actually do something under the bonnet.

Only called them twice, first time they got me going again (suspected fault with fuel pump), second time it happened they towed me and it was the crankshaft sensor at fault.

I called AA out as i couldn't get in a hire car, it took him an hour roadside but he wasn't going to give up nor did he want to brake anything but he did it in the end.

one, ever

i was out with a friend. part of the selector mech on the golf gearbox broke, i couldnt get any gears at the end of the slip road.

rac turned up, i have no cover but my "passenger" did. he got all arsey so i told him to sod himself, i manually selected 4th and made my own way home

new part was £7, only 5 in the country and it was shipped to me from scotland, but luckily I was changing the flywheel that weekend so sorted it all in one go

so i fixed it myself at the side of the road

Im sure i heard somewhere that most of the AAs actual "work" these days was wrong fuel and punctures.

Almost everything else is a "tow it to a main dealer" call.

I had a breakdown/repair service out most days for my various vans :p

Combo - knackered turbo, flat battery, flat tyre, flat battery again, flooded engine (literally), chipped windscreen, broken wingmirror and another flat battery

Movano - oil leak, flat battery, fuel leak, flat battery, flat tyre, flat battery, knackered imobiliser

Transit - flat battery, blown ignition fuse (the big one that has no spare), flat battery and a broken wing mirror

Most of which was all done at the roadside. There were probably a few more flat batteries I've missed too :p

The RAC couldn't fix my car (boost pipe had come off), before he turned up i'd even figured the problem out with my laptop + Vagcom, but couldn't fix it myself due to not wanting my shirt getting messed up, he simply ordered me a flatbed and went on his way.

Only had to call them twice in 7 years.

Bike died. Was chucked on a flat bed and they took me home.

Injector clip broken so it fell off (206 lol) - taped it on to get me home.
