82% of breakdowns fixed at the road side ?

Same here, I've never had cover and always been able to limp back. Maybe I've just been lucky.

I've always managed to get home from "proper" breakdowns like this. Oddly enough the only time I have needed to call the AA was when I flattened the battery on my Civic by leaving the lights on. It was about 9PM, I was the only left person at work and car park was totally flat so no chance of bumping it.

I had a similar one - locked up the petrol station at midnight. I was the only person there. Left the lights on in my Rover 213 - battery totally flat and so was the terrain outside, absolutely no chance of bumping it. Realised I didn't have my mobile, went back in to make a call and realised I knew nobody's number except my mum's house phone - which she'd knocked off the hook (she's forever doing that)

So I had to sleep in the petrol station - it was er.... noisy. Those fridges make a right racket!

Surely you could have found 12V somewhere in the petrol station?

Second time was just yesterday actually. I purchased a car located 40miles away. Car is a non runner due to serious engine problems which i already knew about before buying it. Car is round the back of the sellers mechanics garage. Called RAC up to collect my car and take me home. They flat out refused to collect it because it was deemed 'at a place of repair' I ended up getting my mate to call the AA who loaded it onto the back of a truck no questions asked.

The RAC are a breakdown service, not a car transportation service.

Would you expect people to be able to buy a broken car on eBay in Scotland and get them to transport it to London? Where would you draw the line? People would do that all the time if it was allowed, transporting a car can cost a lot more than an annual breakdown membership - it's obvious what you did isn't part of your cover. If the AA knew what was really going on they wouldn't have allowed it either.

Phone charger will likely be 3.7V.

There should be no shortage of 12V though; halogen lighting, maybe fridge motor, door chime?

Errr I was joking - I didn't think you were being serious. How long do you think a 12v door chime would take to charge a battery enough to crank it over?

They did know. And they still picked us up. You make is sound as if i was pulling a fast one. What i did was perfectly within reason with what my mate was paying for. Do you really think they would have loaded it on the back if something was dodgy about it? LOL

So I can go and buy a broken car on Ebay located anywhere in the country, find a friend who has AA membership and get it taken home free of charge? Cool! Why doesn't everyone else do this rather than pay hundreds to transport cars?

100% fix rate for me, only called one once and this was BMW Assist who replaced the thermostat after local dealership despite being told by me that it needs a new thermostat said the usual "no fault found".

It was at this point I got rid of my BMW after a run of "no fault found"

Twice.

Blowout on the motorway couldn't get the locking nut off because the type monkey air gunned it on. Took him 15mins with a 5ft lng pole to get it off :p

Car wouldn't start, dodgy earth, cleaned and reconnected.

So 2 out of 2 for me!

Twice

Once my starter motor on my clio was stuck (naff solenoid) so was repaired with a big hammer and TLC.

Other time, lets just say it was a k-series rover engine and no more info needed!

Fluffy

You all men who know how to maintain cars.

Im sure a large percentage are from people who.... dont. GF's housemate called out the RAC cos her car had "stopped". Turned out it had no water and had just overheated. I expect there are a lot of these to balance out the ones that go straight onto a truck.

Also, if the RAC man doesnt even come and just sends a truck from a garage to pick you up, would they include that in their stats?

well yesterday was a first for me. Clutch cable snapped when I was ~80miles from home. RAC blokey came out and did a temp repair on it (i had managed to source a new proper cable local to where i was, but it didnt arrive unitl he'd pretty much finished the temp repair).

So there we go, i've now had my car fixed at the roadside.

Twice for me. First was a dead battery in my old Corsa, second was a stupid mistake on my part - I thought my windscreen wiper motor had the power to shift a couple feet of snow (alas it did not) and the connectors snapped. Im covered by HSBC and they came out within 30 minutes also the guy was very helpful.

Both fixed at the road!!
