8600k at 5GHz in Asrock Z370 Extreme4. Power throttling??

Hi, after playing a bit with my 8600k I've managed to reach the 5GHz mark keeping temps and voltage within safe values (around 80ºC and below 1.350v), however, I suffer from a huge thermal throttling that downclocks the cpu close to 3.6GHz. I am including here the results of HWinfo64 at the 15 min mark while running Prime95 small FFT (https://imgur.com/RXVkjvN). You can see that the cpu doesn't keep up with stable 5 GHz with my current config: all core cpu ratio 50, cpu cache ratio 45, PL1 120, PL2 150, offset 140mv and LLC2. I believe the reason are the power limits I've set, lowering the clock (yellow highlighting) when too much power is withdrawn.

An idea to solve this throttling, was to rise the cpu thermal throttle temperature to a max of 90ºC, and then setting the new PL1 with the value of power used at that temp. However, I cannot find that setting in my BIOS. Here are the options I'm able to modify and my current config: https://imgur.com/fTzOReh

How can I tell if is VRM thermal throttling? I'm in the process of learning about oc and I'm not sure. The only thing I can see regarding VRM info is the VRloop sensor and I believe the temperatures there are fine (check my first pic). Correct me if I'm wrong, please.

I think I have "destroyed?" my PC :mad::(:confused:!! Yesterday, I was observing that my voltage was going up to 1.37/1.38v while gaming with the previous stable settings I had (exactly the same ones I linked in my OP, with max Prime95 vcore under load of 1.344v and max temp under load of 79/81ºC). I had those settings saved in one of my bios saved profiles and, basically, I've been reverting to that profile each time I wasn't happy with the changes I was doing along the way. Well, after reading about cases in which the new bios settings were not being updated properly (I thought that was happening as the voltages were rising over the stablished max with Prime95), I decided to select LOAD BIOS DEFAULTS and restart the PC with the idea of setting the profile from zero and saving it again. Something as simple as that, but now... well..., now I have no splash screen whatsoever, no windows booting,... nothing.

The things that I have tried are:
  • Connect several monitors with HDMI, DP and even VGA to the different ports of my GPU an the integrated GPU from the i5 8600k.
  • Swap GPU from older pc
  • Swap PSU
  • Disconnect everything from the mobo leaving only CPU and ram
  • Remove one ram stick once at a time
  • Remove all ram sticks and confirm I can hear the mobo beep codes
I honestly don't know if I have fried my CPU, destroyed the mobo... or if there's something else that I'm not able to identify. I just know yesterday was my fxxking bday and the day didn't end up as I expected when I woke up in the morning.

Any ideas? PLEASE
 
I've done that already, just forgot to write it in the stuff I've tried... I've even closed the bridge with a screwdriver (can't find the jumper)

I have tried both of those things as well. I can't see any image with the external gpu removed when i connect the monitor (i've tried with 2 different monitors) to the mobo hdmi/dvi/vga ports (and yes, my 8600k has an integrated gpu). The mobo speaker is connected correctly, that's why I can hear the beeps when no ram is present.

ah ok, when it's just cpu/mobo/ram what beep code do you hear?
with no ram i hear sequences of 3 beeps each one. I haven't tried with no cpu though
8600k safe voltage is < 1.4v and < 1.35v for daily usage
doesn't look like you exceeded these?
yep, i was keeping the vcore within safe margins. that's why i cannot understand what the hell happened :(
 
what about with cpu/mobo/ram? (just the core components and everything else removed)
The same happens when only ram and cpu are connected to mobo

ASRock motherboards​

  • Short and constant beeps: error with RAM memory refresh.
  • Two short beeps: RAM parity error.
  • Three short beeps: RAM read / write test failed.
  • Four short beeps: system clock error.
  • Five short beeps: CPU error.
  • Six short beeps: keyboard controller error, or keyboard not detected.
  • Seven short beeps – General error, usually due to CPU or RAM.
  • Eight short beeps: graphics card error, check that it is installed correctly and that the power cables are connected.
  • Nine short beeps: ROM error. A Clear CMOS generally does not solve.
  • Ten short beeps: ROM read / write error. A Clear CMOS could fix it.
  • Eleven short beeps: CPU cache check failed.
Yep, there were 3 short beeps only when ram was removed. No more beeps in any other scenario i've tested
 
just humour me...start the pc then disconnect the hdmi cable and then reconnect it again with the pc still on
Thanks for the suggestion. But that's one of the first things I tried before going deeper into the diagnosis. The pc is also connected to the electrical socket and I've pressed the on/off button lol
 
However in the process of fault finding you may have now introduced one…
How? The only reason I can see for this to happen is by removing gpu/ram sticks and inflict some kind of physical damage to the sockets/pins.

Secondly, higher reported voltages when under moderate load compared to high load is expected and not necessary a bad thing.
I know, that's why I'm still completely puzzled with what has happened. My oc settings were perfectly safe (far away from something remotely aggressive).
There is no real reason why settings to defaults would cause it not to work unless by coincidence somethings failed.
I'm starting the believe that's the case... Weird? yes. Impossible? nope... The thing is, it seems the pc goes into some kind of locked state where I can't output any screen, use the keyboard (I think ctrl+alt+del should at least work by rebooting the pc) or pass that infinite looping state.
Set the BIOS clear jumper as per the manual and leave for 60 mins.

Remove the BIOS clear jumper, try again.
This hasn't worked either. I'm running our of options. I think the best thing to do right now is to brig the pc to a hardware workshop and check if either mobo or cpu (both would be a 1 in a million scenario) or maybe even ram are dead. If is the mobo the one to blame though, I'll never buy an asrock product again.

Yeah the only thing I can think of is that the eeprom failed to write properly when you reset to default
I've found a place where they can desolder the bios chip and try to reprogram it. Would that be a waste of time? Even if it isn't... they offer no warranty on the process and it costs from 25 to 50 bucks... I don't know. If the mobo is the one component that has failed (I believe there is a 99% chance that this is what's going on) and if the cpu is fine, I think I will downclock the 8600k sell it for cheap (warning the buyer that it has been mildly oc'ed for some time) and getting a new ddr4 mobo+cpu (maybe a 5800x3d with a decent b550 or x570) and reusing the rest of my components. This setup is 5 y/o now, so maybe is time to (forcedly) move forward.
I'll post the results from the workshop's diagnostic once I have some news though.

i think the best bet would be to try your components on another mobo and see if the issue persists
probably worth bringing it to a computer repair shop where they may have a spare mobo to do the above
So if the mobo is the failing component, it's not worth trying to reprogram it. That was my guess as well, yeah.
I already have an appointment on Monday and they will check the pc during the same morning. For 20 bucks they'll test mobo with another intel 8th gen and the cpu with a z370 chipset. Honestly? I hope is the cpu the one that is broken as getting a second hand 8/9th gen cpu is cheaper and safer than buying an used/refurbished mobo. I won't be so lucky...

UPDATE: the problem has been solved. It seems the bios got corrupted when loading UEFI default values. It shouldn't have happened, but it did. I brought the pc to the shop and after desoldering & flashing the bios, everything got fixed. 40 bucks for the whole reparation. Could have been worse. At least now I have the latest available bios version...

I wonder why the second bios didn't kick in though...

Anyway, after this episode, this is the last ASSrock product that I'm gonna own.
