8700K Disaster, Bent on one side despite not applying much pressure when installing

Hi,

Not so long ago, I purchased the i7-8700K and was looking forward to a new high-end build. Unbelievably, the CPU has bent on one side after installing the Corsair H115i Pro RGB. I didn't use any excess force, installed the processor using the standard cross formation and I can't believe a small pump could have done this to the CPU.

The pictures are not for the faint-hearted and I'm gutted this has happened. I know Skylake had some issues with bending but still, this shouldn't happen.

The item was bought from Overclockers, and I'm interested if there's anything that can be done. I'm guessing ntel wouldn't RMA it as there's physical damage and it's my word against theirs.

Argh, guessing I'll have to fork out a lot of money to get a replacement.

Just checked the motherboard socket, no marks, damaged pins anything.

Yeh wouldn't have even expected this from something like a Noctua NH-D15S. Weird how an AIO with such a small block damaged it

It wouldn't hurt to ask OcUK and Intel for an RMA, see who if any will agree, ask real nicely.

Yep it doesn't feel very substantial. Almost soft.

Hoping something can be done because it wasn't caused by undue pressure during installation.

Haha no, although it kinda looks like it from the images. The mounting screws were hand-tightened, i don't even use a screwdriver as a bit worried about clamping force.

Spoke to Overclockers, they were helpful but said they can't replace it as Intel wouldn't accept it due to physical damage. Be interesting to hear if Corsair had any others with bent CPUs.

I don't think they even test them but guessing they would inspect it for damage.

Nope installed in the correct orientation. I didn't inspect the CPU closely when it arrived so unsure if it wasn't perfect from the factory.

I do have a 5820K I could go back to but would need to get hold of an x99 board.

Could try but bending it could result in the gbent area snapping. Yep that's the only issue.

I see where you're coming from, but i lined up the triangle and installed the cpu correctly.

Had a go at bending it, not perfect but looks better than it did before.

Good point, checked that and the cold plate is in its original/perfect shape.

Not at the moment, but I'll probably go back to a Noctua. Also, the mounting backplate for the Corsair isn't very good as it's loose despite trying a few refits.

So far I'm thinking of buying an X99 board and going back to the 5820K I have stored away.

Yep unlikely that it will work. Just weighing up my options, get another, go Ryzen or move back to X99.

I could try a replacement with Intel but presume they will inspect it and go no way.
